Title: S2C server outage
Post by: Wittsend on May 16, 2021, 11:20:21 AM
In the early hours of this morning all S2C presence on the internet was "wiped out".
(It was like we were cut off because our bill hadn't been paid.)

It seems that the home partition was unmounted from our server, during an upgrade with our ISP.
They have restored us and taken steps so the partition can't be dismounted willy nilly.

We've never had this problem before.

Anyway all's well now and you can carry on enjoying the forum and website.
(Any problems, please let me know.)

We do get forum/internet breakdowns from time-2-time.

It can be a bit of a shock when you turn your computer on.

Is it me ?
Is my internet down ?
Have I pressed the wrong button ?

... and similar thoughts go through your mind.

The first thing to do is try another website - the BBC website (love it or loath it) is a good test.
If you can't get the BBC then the fault is at your end.

If you see a screen display like the one below the fault is on our server.
We can usually get things going again within a few hours, so come back and try a bit latter on.
Obviously it's hard to give you the news of what's going on.
People email me there's a fault and eventually as message will go up on Facebook.

I don't understand a word of it but I'm glad it's not down to me.

I did exactly as suggested and tried the BBC website (which I quite like - I've a lot of time for the BBC as one of the last refuges from the rank commercialism of constant pointless adverts), and therefore realised very quickly that it was a S2C server problem.

So feeling quite smug that I can get to grips with IT at my advanced age - makes up for my total incompetence in every other practical matter........

Off most of the morning. Only now have the shakes subsided.

Oi! Crumbly,

Is that a challenge?  When I joined the RAF, I didn't need a "1250". Identity Card. Everybody knew everybody else.

But yes, I agree with what you say. Going IT, is like moving to a different country, where everybody speaks a different language, the words are unpronouncable, and the alphabet is used differently ... something like Welsh.

Having said that, my daughter started school in a Welsh Valley school (where everything was taught in Welsh) soon after we moved to Wales. She was not yet five years old, and had never heard a word of Welsh. By the end of the first year, she was top of her class in Welsh.

Similarly, she is usually able to sort my PC out.  (I don't like her either!)

I noticed it was down with the 404 Page not found error at some ongodly hour and took it as the universe telling me to get off the internet and go to bed.

Good heavens no 602!  I haven’t a competitive bone in my body.......

But late in my 7th decade on this earth, I’ve realised the many benefits to be had by taking the trouble to understand (at least a bit) modern information technology. This forum being only one of the benefits - albeit one of the very best.

I’ve also managed to avoid most of the IT problems, mainly by staying off social media. I do think that it’s only by using IT daily, is the best way to develop some level of skill and knowledge. It does help me that I’m an Apple fan, as my iPhone, my MacBook and my iPad are all integrated easily. I find Apple software very easy to use, and if I do get in a mess - which is rare - Apple support is excellent.
The only downside is that Apple products aren’t cheap, but that’s because they just work - no problem.

I don’t want this to sound like an advert for Apple, but for an old geezer like me, unless I get to grips with modern technology, I will feel isolated and left out of so much that my offspring are up to - particularly in these CV-19 days.......

Well said ^^^

More and more of our daily living is done by computer on the internet, online.

The list is endless:-

Banking
Paying utility bills
The doctors, the chemists
Shopping
Booking things, buying tickets
Car tax
etc. etc.

You can't avoid it (unless you live in a cave).

Hi,

Everybody should have a dog ... that they can kick when the internet fails.

Your PC will still not work, but having dominion over something will make you feel better.

Hmmm! VIRTUAL dog?

I hope you don't mean that we should kick our dog 602. That's not a very charitable thing to tell us to us to do!!

Hi Neil,

I wouldn't suggest that you kick your dog ... come and kick mine.  :-X

I once watched a RAF policeman trying to persuade his German Shepherd to ignore a passing cat ... guessing size 9, army pattern boots with hob-nails hammered hard into the dogs ribs. The dog ignored him.

I've also sat on a gelding, that went rigid while a mare strolled up, turned round, and gave him both hind hooves in the ribs ... just for being a gelding?

My nag relaxed after the mare ambled off. He didn't seem unduly bothered.

I am not advocating ill treating animals. I find that a stern voice, and a threatening expression on my face works best. With horses, just carrying a crop concentrates their minds, and slapping the crop on my riding boots tended to make them want to please me.

I was riding my instructors own 16.2hh hunter, lined him up on a jump. He balked. "You sod!", I said. So he left me sitting on the jump pole.  :-[

The instructor told me I should not swear at her horse.

Next time round, I gave my boot a slap with the crop. The horse went into VTO mode  :agh. I stayed on, but that was my first (and last) proper jump.

602, I wouldn't want to kick ANY dog, let alone yours unless that fog was attacking my dogs or Mrs. B or me.
