Title: Workshop Meeting
Post by: Dopey on June 24, 2021, 02:45:02 PM
Has anyone had one since Mark has gone? I miss them, they are great days to meet others, I was thinking If there was enough Interest we could have a BBQ at mine, and meet up after all this madness had died down a little, what everyone's thought on it?

I never made it to any of Mark’s dos but I was always tempted and I’ve wondered if they would ever be resurrected as it’s a great way of disseminating what must be an ever dwindling pool of knowledge and of making new contacts / friends. Heathrow is plenty close enough for me but I’m not sure I’m confident enough to trundle a Series down there. If the date suits then I’d be up for a bit of burger and banter.

Workshop meetings are a very useful "tool in the armoury" that is the CLub

Often a great way of helping fellow members / mates to overcome issues, lack of arsedness, help where several hands are needed and such things

I am not 100% certain, but feel sure that given the right conditions and numbers these meets could well be going ahead within the guidelines

Hopefully not too long to wait now but guidance for indoor meetings here in Scotland is still limited to 6 people from 3 households for areas in "Level 2", which as that includes a fair bit of the "Central Belt" includes me too....  The key bit there being 3 households, so the workshop owner plus 2....  If it all stays on track then by the back end of July we are all supposed to be at Level 0, but even then its 8 people from 4 households. At that level we'd have been OK for our last couple of Workshop meets.

Outdoors its easier. At the moment "Level 2" means 8 from 8 households, so small events are OK. By the latter end of July we should be at 15 people from 15 households, which would mean that larger Green Road Runs, BBQ etc should be OK.  I'm thinking a "Scenic Drive" and an outdoor social of some description to kick off...

Don't worry abut a short trip down the M40. Pre covid, 5000 miles every year in France was not unusual. 2 weeks ago we dug the 88 out of the garden where it had been sat for 2 years, put the battery back on, checked the levels, then drove it from Hillingdon to Stratfored upon avon. No risk no gain.

I'm up for a trundle around the M25. The lad Croydon way who has the series 3 on the front cover of May's CLR is also game.

In the early 2000's Mark & Ian Rumsey hosted many workshop meetings at their Tring Workshop, ostensibly for the Thames Valley members, but some came from far and wide. There was a large parking area that could accommodate many Land Rovers.

No serious workshop work was done, for safety reasons, but the odd thing was fixed in the yard and there were exchanges of parts etc.
Basically is was a social in the garage with tea, sandwiches and chat  :first

This is different to a group going round to a member's house/garage/yard and undertaking a specific job, engine swap, chassis repair, re-wiring.

Workshop meetings are now (shortly) possible after lock-down restrictions are lifted.

All it needs is for someone to provide a venue, and a date.
Usually they are organised on an area basis for local members.

There is no reason why they can't be held anywhere.
I would say just be careful if you are doing a specific task and not to have too many hands on the job.
The organiser/host needs to be clear what the agenda is.
If you go to someone's house then the risk is theirs and it's not a club event.

I have already offered a workshop meet in the West Sussex coast to our region rep Eddie Grinstead.

Never hosted one before, but the description posted above is pretty much what I had in mind. I just need to clean up my workshops a lot!

I'd be up to help with that. (Not the workshop clean up! - I've got enough clearing up to do in my own workshop...) I mean the event itself and the clear up afterwards!
