Title: Good Quality Paint?
Post by: crumbly65 on October 04, 2019, 04:20:47 PM
Just welding in 2 replacement footwells, and I need to get some Marine Blue Paint.  Not too sure how much I need

Anybody care to recommend a good quality paint?  I've noted the paint codes put up in another topic on here, so some idea of suppliers/manufacturers, even costs if you've bought some recently, would be very helpful....

I've used Tractol on mine , not too expensive and it's stayed on quite well...

I used Paintman for my engine paint. Not overly cheap, but a quality product

Paintman uses HMG Paints? That's where I go for coach enamel

Another vote for HMG. Very helpful advice on which product will give the best results in a given application and high quality products. Minimum order 1litre. Can anyone confirm that Paintman are supplying HMG paints?

I can't vouch for paintman, however when I ordered some DBG for another project from paddocks it arrived in a HMG tin, no issues!

I have used Smith and Allen for all the paint for my restoration. Good quality paint and easy to use.

Tractol has been used for the chassis and running gear.

The engine was painted in Tractol machine enamel and looks fantastic

The bodywork is in Tractol grey primer and Tekaloid coach enamel.

Very helpful and knowledgeable staff.

I am really pleased with the Paintman paint.
Easy to apply either brush or spray. High cost is usually ‘upped’ by postage but you can collect from their place Retford- and they are very helpful. Also have some of their panels - looking good so far

If I was doing another restoration then I would use Paintman for body panels. Simply because the colour is more accurate than Tekaloid or Tractol.

If I'm brushing the panels I'd use Paddocks paint - its HMG synthetic which brushes well and colour is correct and the stuff doesn't need a xylene solvent like Tractol or Hammerite.  (White spirit seem to work.)

I started with Paintman and then discovered LKQ Coatings who sell the same synthetic coach enamel at less than half the price!  They also do spectra colour matching for about £20, which gave me a really good colour match.

There are multiple grades of Coach Enamel paint, the lower grades are mixed through machine and the highest grades are mixed by hand. Paintman are proud to sell the highest quality of this paint. You only need 1 or 2 layers of paint with either brush, roller or spray gun. The different grades of Coach Enamel are usually reflected in the price.

I have attached images showing before and after one coat of our Coach Enamel red (on the left), in comparison to one of our competitors (on the right), directly on to the green. Out of interest, red is one of the most difficult colours to get a one coat finish. To build the competitors coat, it took 3 coats, in comparison to only 1 of ours.

Our Marine Blue paint has been matched to an original panel.

If you have any more questions please feel free to message me. :)

Thank you to all who responded to my original posting - I'm very grateful for all the advice and comments.

It's pleasing that bethpaintman made that contribution.  By amazing coincidence, I placed an order with Paint Man this very morning, and found them to be very good to deal with.  Evidently, the paint will be with my mechanic by Thursday, and they were helpful over the phone, happy to give me advice, and ensuring I got exactly what I wanted.

I'm sure I'll be happy with the result, and I'm looking forward to getting my S2 back on the road soon......

I've been very happy with my Paintman Marine Blue so far....my only issue has been keeping dust/dirt out of the paint while it dries, as it does take some time to dry, being an enamel. Other than that I have found it very nice to put on either by brush, roller or spraygun.

Currently also in the throws of painting my project. I have got some Paintman deep bronze green, and various primers etc. I’ve done a set of doortops so far, with good results. Now I’m working on the bonnet.

Just run out of undercoat, so need to get another order in!

The only problem I am having is that I can’t get my workshop warm enough and it takes a while to dry. I might have to postpone until the spring.

I've some Paintman Limestone coming in the post.

I only want to do small areas so bought a couple of 400ml aerosols, but they are expensive @ over £14 per tin plus £7.99 postage and VAT on top.

I hope it matches and sprays smoothly out of the nozzle........

I used an aerosol on the vent flaps. Not as good as a spray gun I’m afraid. You need to warm the tin up before use, also warm the metal if you can, and shake it loads!

Thanks Gareth.

From previous experience, it's kind of what I expected. ;)

Can't try it out yet, as UPS failed to deliver yesterday, as "couldn't find the address." (How did two other couriers find the house which is right by the side of the road, yesterday?) :shakeinghead

Strangely, Halfords aerosol paints spray pretty well, straight from the can.

(Their Rover White is an exact match for LR Ivory White, as used on early One Ten and Ninety).

Wherever possible work indoors if you can so that you can control the air movement. If the area you are working in is dusty, make sure you clean it thoroughly and wet the floors before starting to paint. This will minimise the risk of dust settling on your newly painted surface during the application or drying period. :)
