Title: Avon Rangemaster VS Michelin latitude cross 750 R16
Post by: 1961 Boy on October 25, 2021, 02:13:25 PM
Hi
Time for new boots for my 1961 series II. At the moment there are Goodyear G90s but as I do minimal off roading, I’m considering Avon Rangemasters or Michelin Latitude Cross. The Avon’s are £200 less for 5. But would welcome any advice on the best tyres for roadwork incl comfort, noise and grip in the wet
Many thanks
Peter

I love my Avon Rangemasters, a good budget tyre from ATS  :first

OK on the road, not noticed any undue noise, OK in the wet if you don't Drive like lewis Hamilton.
Good off-road on wet grass and mud.

I have the Michelin Latitudes on my Ninety, pretty quiet good in the wet and wear very well. I also have Avon Rangemasters on my 109 and they are also ok and IMO look more period on an older vehicle than the Michelin’s.

I found the Michelin won hands down on the road. No contest. Better off road too, but not great by any means. Excellent on road. Great road feel and very sticky, even in the wet. I often found myself drifting into the kerb with other tyres. I do drive assertively though.

I have some Avon Ranger ATT, not the best looking tyre but seem a good road tyre in the wet and dry and I got some during a offer at John Craddocks for only £50 each inc.VAT and delivery, 235/85 size :first

It may be worth waiting for Black Friday and see the offers ???

I've been running on General Grabber AT tyres since I bought my S2 20 years ago.

Most of my running is on road, and the tyres have been excellent.  They're quiet, with good grip, and long-lasting.  I'm just on my 2nd set (which cost me around £370) in the 20 years , and the tyres have been capable enough off-road to not have caused me any difficulties - more than good enough for most green-laning expeditions......

I`ve got 235.85.16 General Grabber AT2 on my Wolf and they are excellent. However I wouldn't want them on the S11a because they just don't look right, not in period. I've also been told they make the steering heavier and when you don't have power steering that's a big deal.

When I do replace my 205s it will be for 7.50 Avon Rangemasters, they fill the wheel arch and look great.

^^^ I think you mention a real problem with some big tyres, heavy steering and also total loss of feel on road markings and man hole covers especially in the wet

I have tried avon rangemasters on my dormobile and have got stuck (no traction) many times in fields when towing trailers.
Dreadful things, in my experience, on grass, but much much better on road

I found that the Latitude cross tyres were fine for use on a road biased Defender 90, but not much cop off road at all. Range Masters (Land Rover used to call them "Ditch Finders" suit a 109 or 110 better visually in my view. I think the Range Master (when available) makes a good compromise tyre. I think you will find the Michelins a far better drive on tarmac though.

I run both. Latitude Cross on my 88" and Rangemasters on my 109.
The Latitude Cross is a much better tyre, but then it is significantly more modern. I've honestly never had a problem off road with them either, for all the green laning I do, they go everywhere those on more aggressive tyres do. Sure, if you start doing extreme stuff, you'll get stuck, but then it is a road biased tyre. They also last very well. I put my current set on about 5 years ago and they are just coming up for needing replacement. I would say they have done 50k miles in that time, possibly more.
The Rangemaster is an older design. you seem to get more flex in the sidewalls, so it doesn't handle as well. Probably no better of road either. The big issue I've had though is with perishing. I don't know what rubber they use, but my spare is perished to the point that I'm considering not using it (Thats pretty bad, considering some of the stuff I have run) and its only 6 years old.
They do look much more period though
Andrew

I have Latitude Cross on my Discovery TD5 and it seems a great tyre for my mainly road use, I would like them on the series but not cheap :shakeinghead

I run rangemasters on both motors at the moment. I wanted to keep to a 7.50 on the Carawagon and have something that looked fairly period. I went over to them on my daily 88" too, as it's mainly road miles. As Alex said, not great on wet grass and possibly the worst tyres I've had in the snow too... although the Carawagon took us all round Iceland on rangemasters no bother (all rock and sand though really) and we went to the Alps on a skiing holiday in the 88" (but I had chains and I needed to use them!)

The ones on the 88 haven't got much life left now and I'm thinking of changing to something else but I haven't yet decided. Again I'd like to stick to a 7.50 and if I run the same tyre on both motors it is more practical too.

Rangemasters on my 88. Got it stuck in the paddock at home when the grass was wet. They dug themselves into the clay underneath and did NOT want to come out.....though maybe the Latitudes wouldn't either!
Haven't used them on the road much, so can't really comment.
