^^^^ are you comparing like with like?

An all terrain tyre will always be noisier than a standard road tyre, surely, because the all terrain tyre has a more aggressive tread?

I remember the drone Firestone SAT's used to make. Could tell if my dad was coming home from work when he was about 2 miles away!

I am comparing 7.50 x 16. A good example is the overlander's choice. Michelin XZY 7.50 x16 - Euro Label @ 69dB
At 69dB that's a big margin on anything else. You'd need a Tdi not to notice it.

And it's not the quietest. Michelin XCA 66dB. Bit dear though.

HI Craig,

Could tell if my dad was coming home from work when he was about 2 miles away!

The Snowdrops who guarded the "chickens that layed chocolate Easter eggs", at RAF Barnham knew when I was returning to camp in the wee hours of Monday morning. They could hear every gear change for a similar couple of miles. That van howled like a banshee ... par for the course with early Mini gearboxes.

PS  I'm guessing that Wittsend will understand my reference to "chocolate Easter eggs"  :whistle  Everybody living within a few miles knew what lurked in the concrete chicken coops. Were the egg shells made out of Blue Steel?

Found Rangemasters on JC. They are just under £100 a corner, plus £12 for tube, plus balancing and fitting.    Still good tyres though. If they came down a shade in the new year sales, I might be tempted into a set.

The reason that the 7.50R16 XCA, XZY and Aglis are much more expensive is that they come under a different price structure as in Light Commercial up to 7.5 tonne, can't think of too many people who use them up our way.

People will struggle to find equally good tyres for less than this price, unless you want to go for remoulds.

I take it that RMs are suitable for standard LWB rim profiles....?

I think I’ve currently got Chinese ‘Security’ (or similar) 7.50x16s on mine - which I think look great, but obviously aren’t too sophisticated. They’ll need replacing at some point (as an aside, always wondered how the tyre tread depth regulations are pragmatically applied to such extreme tread patterns....).

I’ve also got the small issue of my Sankey trailer (just completed). I bought a set of part-worn radials from an S3 owner - which are fine for the trailer but which will force me to carry two spares when towing as I won’t legally be allowed to mix a cross-ply and a radial on the same axle in the event of a puncture...

Had a quick look at remoulds but all well over £100
I have these fitted to the Range Rover for the winter, used them on several vehicles in the past cant fault them and the only ones I can find under £100 each

Cheapest will be £100 a corner and you'll struggle to find 7.50s for that. If you're lucky there's these....

Did stoobee get tyres yet?

If you're still open to suggestions, I'd vote Michelin XZL.

A bit rubbish on hard pack snow due to lack of sipes, but I find them otherwise excellent. I don't find them an issue on the road, but they actually work off it. In the past I've tried more AT style tyres (Michelin Latitude and Pirelli somethingorother) which simply didn't work in the mud.

A couple if friends managed to source sets of "take offs" of the Michelins already on Defender steel wheels.  they were delivery mileage tyres as they had been replaced by alloy wheels and tyre of a different size

They came from somewhere in the Rossendale valley, the guy selling had a number of sets, sorry dont know any more but a bit of internet searching may bear fruit.
