My new toy OT (from old forum)
« on: August 11, 2019, 12:14:48 PM »

Alan suggested I transfer this thread to the new forum. I must admit I did not realise it was here. Also this is a typical general interest OT  engineering thread not purely lr which I hope people enjoy. It's all mechanicking.

I am now the custodian of this beast , a graphotype 350 dog tag machine from the 50,s. I have spent hours rebuilding this work of art and it's just about fully functional. 80 punches and dies to service, bits to make, clean and refurbish then adjust ! It's the epitamy of mechanical engineering. I have use my lathe which has been handy and good for me when the next lr part needs help by extending my skills. I had to get my local laser welder to repair some of the type faces. Awesome work. Look closely at the A,B,H and R andsee how he built up damage.

Apart from the obvious dog tags to wearing I am looking at other ideas such as key ring fobs for our vehicles. Great idea but what do you put on them? My mind is thinking security risk and perhaps just a 'if found ring this mobile number xxxx would do it. Putting your name address or Land Rover , reg etc is asking for trouble. Any thoughts?

That's John my friendly laser welder! A magician. I have some wear on the sliding shaft end plates so will prob get him to run a few bears of .2 weld t take it out.
