Anti Theft?
« on: July 26, 2022, 08:57:55 AM »

May have been asked before but no search brings up a answer :stars

I was looking at auction: #124856157617
It seems a good anti theft idea and may have other advantages :bright-idea
Anyone done it? I understand it is only a idea for late S11/S111 and not wheels fitted with a pinch bolt, and only works I think with a after markey steering wheel which is a shame

It certainly won't fit a standard steering wheel.
A near neighbour has a similar device on his 08 130 crew cab tipper. I think you have to buy a matching steering wheel. There's one such set up advertised in LRO and it ain't cheap but what's your Land Rover worth to you.

Friend tried one on a series III with a 90/110 column but it moved the wheel closer to the driver, further away from the indicator stalk and wasn't at all comfortable. Ended up returning it.

Thank You, good points, yes it would move the wheel towards the driver being about 1" thick but the main concern for me is the limited choise of wheels athough at the moment I have a 15" one fitted but a classic banjo style from a 1960's midget which would not fit on this device... but still thinking and unsure if it puts off a theif

The lack of a steering wheel would be a good theft deterrent to anyone that intended to drive the vehicle away. If they intended to load it onto a trailer or flatbed then it wouldn't stop them.
A good steering wheel lock may do the same thing as would a pedal lock. Leaving the transfer box in neutral may stop the thief unfamiliar with Land Rovers.

I think anything to slow them down or make a noise in its removal is a good idea but if someone is determined and has the time, they will take anything which is where trackers become useful.

There was a report somewhere from a visitor to South Africa who hired a taxi that had no steering wheel. The driver just snapped on a pair of mole grips and then drove normally  :)

It seems to be a very expensive and inconvenient fuss that would only deter the casual or amateur thief.

I get it for very very expensive upmarket super cars as a bit of a gimmick.  These cars have a sophisticated tracking service.

But for a Series 2 Land Rover  :shakeinghead

Unless at home, you're going to be walking round with a big lump of metal, not very practical.

A pair of mole grips will get it up an a recovery truck.

I think you'd be better off with one of those steering wheel locking covers - a good visual deterrent to the "casual" thief.
I would save my money, or maybe a steering wheel locking bar ???

As we/I keep posting in topics like this - If they want it, they'll take it no matter what precautions you've taken and before you can shout "Stop Thief" it's gone - either cut up into pieces or stuffed into a shipping container and away.

Get your vehicle properly insured on an agreed value policy and keep your fingers crossed.

I had a Momo emoivale wheel on my Lotus.  Became a pain to take on/offto the point I rarely did.  I have bought a pedal box,  a steeing wheel lock for when I pop into a shop, and a racker now for my S2a.

The more I think and read the posts about the "lift off" steering wheel idea, I think it wold be more tempting for me if the kit allowed the fitting of a standard steering wheel but I'm yet to see amything like that :shakeinghead

When it comes to keeping your pride and joy secure layers of security is the way forward.  The longer someone takes to get the vehicle to the point when they can move it the more likely they will either give up or be heard - garaged, behind locked gates, behind other vehicles, extra locks, steering lock, fuel cut off valve, tracker, etc., etc., etc.  I am sure others have other and better suggestions.

Visible devices on my Series 3 are a large Bulldog wheel clamp and a pedal lock. There are invisible ones too.

I have the same visible deterrents as Neil (thanks for the discussion Neil!).

I would have fitted one of these:
(as I have on other classic vehicles), but with a pinch bolt steering wheel it would be very easily removed.

^^^ I'm unsure how you got a small Diskloc to fit a Land Rover steering wheel, I used a large one on a standard wheel...

My Series 3 steering wheel which I bought from Dunsfold decades ago has a thicker rim than its predecessor and the paint doesn't come off. It seems to be a plastic material and a Disklok for a standard Series 3 wheel is unlikely to fit.
