New toy
« on: September 03, 2022, 11:49:45 AM »

I just bought myself a shiny new MIG welder. My son kindly bought me a trolley for Father’s Day ( tomorrow in Australia). I have only done stick welding before, so I will be on a bit of a learning curve for a while.  Can anyone out there recommend what type of shielding gas to use?  I will probably go down the exchange bottle route. I’ll get some scrap metal from work and start practicing.

I use Argon 95% CO2 5% get it in a rent free gas bottle 20l, people have used CO2 bottles as used in pubs.
I think the 5% mix is good for 6mm thick steel any thicker and then go to 10% CO2.

Get yourself a regulator to fit a larger bottle, its is more economical and reliable I have found.

I purchased a Mig just over a year ago and one item that I was advised to get was a gas flow meter. Helped me set it up correctly and helps on gas consumption.
