Help identifying engine number please
« on: September 11, 2022, 05:21:41 PM »

I may have asked this before so apologies if I have. I was just poking around as you do and something made me photograph the engine number and now I have I’m not sure what it says. It’s supposed to be a 3 bearing 2 1/4 Diesel but I can’t find a list of numbers anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated
As far as I can see it reads ….7145552 J

Although I’m not sure if it’s a 7 or just a scratch that looks like a number

Yes that’s what I have just realised thanks. So it’s a correct number then ?

What does the letter at the end signify ?

271 is a 2.25 Diesel engine prefix,

The Letter at the end Was changed when there was a significant design change, J would date the engine to Jan or Feb 1968  :cheers

Thanks Tom. That’s interesting as the vehicle was registered new in January 69 so I assume that means there no more changes before that time ?

Nope, 271*****K appeared in March 1968 and I seem to think they ran through then until the end of production but may be mistaken.

Still, I’d suggest that it’s probably the original engine to your 2a though - any idea of the build date?.
