Hi,

Following WW2 (Building Halifax bombers) my father set up as a self-employed tool-maker in a shed next to the coal merchants stable.

He was asked to quote for making a 5/16" stud, and a shallow tray. He asked 1/6d (£0. 07p) for the stud, and £5 for the tray, as it involved making a press tool.

The customer knocked him down to a shilling (£0.5p) for the stud, then ordered 500 of each.

Dad tried to revise the price of the tray, but the customer refused to listen

Most of the cost of making the trays, went into making the press tool, after which it took a few seconds to make each tray.
