Land rover discovery series 1 classic insurance
« on: March 14, 2023, 12:03:43 PM »

Does anyone on here run a series 1 discovery as an everyday, but insure on a classic policy.

Which company would you recommend?

I dont do a lot of miles so limited miles may suit.

Same question again range rover classic.

The prices I have had thus far are approaching 10X higher than same cover on my series vehicles.

10X better vehicle I think not!

I just had a quote from Peter James Insurance of £241.48 for a 2002 Freelander 1 Td4 Commercial and that's fully comp with a £100 excess and limited mileage of 3k PA.

Hi,

I was just about to mention that Liverpool Victoria do classic car insurance, but I "done a Google"on Google, to sure of my facts, only to find that they are about to stop.

They say they will honour existing quotes, but I think there is a cut-off date for even those.

Jan '02 Freelander 1 Td4, insured to next February: £134.44. 2, 000 miles.

Range Rover Classic. 1996MY, is insured in a fleet policy with two Series Ones and a SIIA: £285 to end of October this year.

Adrian Flux. It helps if you have a track record and several vehicles with them - and haggle hard at each renewal.

I have used Footman James for many years now, can have up to 5 classic cars on the one policy, when I bought a certain 1999 Suzuki Jimny from a fine fellow from this here parish I phoned up FJ to see if I could add it to the classic policy, no problem they said, cost £28 inc the £20 admin fee…. Think I was paying at the time £175 ish for the three Land Rovers so went up to £183 with the Jimny on….. I know when I added the mini a few years before it cost a full £4.80 + admin  :stars
Have had the policy for a good few years now so may influence the prices??

Hi,

My experience has been that a Classic policy requires the classic to be a second car, and there might be age limitations of both car and driver. They want the car to be old, but seemed to frown at the driver being over 80.

Which reminds me ... I must transfer Barbara's Hyundai, and it's insurance, , into my name, to preserve my NCD. We are now a one car household, with Barbara having no expectancy of ever leaving her bed, let alone leaving the house.

thanks all

matt that seems reasonable for the freelander as they normally pan commercials.

alan rover i am with peter best but have not quizzed them re multi vehicle mixed policy.

exile rrc and series combined that is kind of what i was looking for, does the range rover have any mods or non standard bits.  the problems I have encountered I think maybe due to small deviations from stock, but i am painstaking else policy is void.

For instance manual transmission swapped to automatic.

Dan recent attempts with flux have resulted in high quotations, hence been with peter best for a good few years now.

The shed what year and engine is your d2?

Big chris, I have driven them when they first came out, jimny that is and apart from being thirsty for a small motor and a bit tiring on long journeys did not ever think I could get one on a classic or combine policy, so thanks for the heads up.

Hi 2286
My D2 was a 1999 TD5. I have been with IAM Surety, Sureterm and a couple of others over the years. All pretty similar cost, what varied was varying cover details.

I have found that even when you diddle about with the mileage and cover level, the insurer just go unlimited and fully comp as default.

The inclusion of a modern classic I was always told was limited to the exotic.  The did not want to lump in my 1989 205 grd but would have if it was a 205 gti?

Has that kind of prejudice gone?

Similarly are they more accepting of mods done by previous owners say, engine transmission swaps and suspension lifts.

I run stock vehicles to avoid having to go through the tedium of listing deviations, and would strip off any non standard kit asap.
