Is This a Scam?
« on: May 24, 2023, 03:58:29 PM »

Today I received a packaged addressed correctly but not to me but another name. It appears to come from Amazon. Unfortunately I couldn't catch the courier to refuse it. I've not opened it. I've heard of Amazon sending unsolicited goods. There are QR codes on it but I can't get any results when I attempt to scan.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes possibly. Goods delivered. Guy comes to door next day saying he is "from Amazon". Apologises that good gone to wrong address. He then takes the goods. Few days later, probably after payment is declined, Amazon contact you and want the goods back (they have record of it being delivered to you!)

Just keep the goods and see if Amazon contacts you.

This happened to a friend of mine, but nobody came for the goods. After 2 weeks he contacted Amazon and they investigated and eventually said they could not trace where goods had come from and just to keep them. On opening he found he had gained a "FitBit" worth a couple of hundred quid!

Under no circumstances give the goods to anyone calling at the door :-\

Thanks Worf.
I'll just wait and see what happens. I have checked in our road but no one of the extremely made up name lives here.
I'll visit the O2 nerd shop tomorrow to find out how to use the installed QR scanner.

The QR code will only work on your phone if it is a weblink. If its a QR code for distribution management, it will need to be scanned by Amazon's own systems, not a generic web based QR code. Probably not worth wasting time at O2. You don't need a QR code App on your phone if you have Google search loaded. Point the camera at it and it should automatically open it in a Google web browser if the code is a valid web site. In this case, I would suggest unlikely.

I agree with Worf. Just sit on it and wait for Amazon to contact you. Don't waste your time trying to sort it. No harm in opening it to see if it a valuable item or not!

I'd wait until I had another Amazon delivery to me, or saw an Amazon delivery chap in the street and ask him.

Any mail will be returned "Not known at this address?!" Nobody called Randy L. Collings lives in the road.

I appreciate it`s too late now, but I very strongly recommend you not scan any QR code unless you know it`s origin. It`s a known way of getting into your phone and once in, it sends personal information (passwords, bank details etc) to the scammers.

This scam was highlighted by Which? The Consumers assoc.

Thanks Fred.
The QR code wouldn't scan anyway and I've uninstalled the app.

I'm going to leave it unopened for a while. When I do open it I'll have to describe the contents as putting photos on the forum is way beyond my extremely limited knowledge of that sort of computer work.

Yet another reason to have nothing to do with Amazon.

I don't belong to any social media rubbish and do not carry out online banking. I'm going to email Citizens' Advice to see what they think as my details will be confidential. I' m on the voters' list but not the full one but if anyone wants an address it's easy enough to find I reckon.

I don't think it's a brushing scam. The package is addressed to Randy L Collings at my address. There's no one of that name in the road and it's a real American name which steers me towards an Amazon "legal scam." I'm not going to contact them because then they'll have my email. I won't hand the package over to anyone who calls for it either.
