HELP NEEDED URGENT North East of England
« on: June 12, 2023, 07:45:12 PM »

Hi My 1958 has just lost a rear spring hanger. I need to get her fixed urgently. I'm a Beekeeper and she's my main source of transport and we are right in the middle of the busy season. Every garage I've rung either doesn't do welding or can't do it until until August. I need a recommendation for a garage in the Stockton on Tees area experienced in 4x4 who can do it ideally this week. I'd do it myself but my welder isn't up to it and my welding is faecal.

Hi,

When I was young, broken springs were frequently "fixed" by tying a brick top of the  axle, to maintain the gap under the chassis.

Its probably best if  "I get my coat". :shakeinghead

I thought PVH had closed down. Will give them a call tomorrow.

Alternatively I need someone who can weld.

It’s a shame your so far away!! I would have helped you out with your dilemma! I can weld and I like honey!!  :thud
There must be a real garage up there somewhere  ??? Possibly another member may come along soon and offer a helping hand… if you can’t find a garage to do the work have a look for a fabrication company, someone that makes steel fencing and gates, they maybe able to help with a bit of welding  ???

My mother lives in Bishop Auckland and I pass this place often, when I’m back in blighty visiting family.  Not too far from you - could be worth a call.

Good luck!

Thanks
Bishop Auckland is too far to drive with a loose spring. I've plenty of local garages it just finding one with a slot. Current plan is to get a temporary L200 then get the Landy fixed as and when the local garages have space. Still may need help with the welding if I decide to do it myself.

Hi, w

Can you buy "REAR QUARTER CHASSIS"?

Possibly an easier and more convincing job, but probably more expensive. Cut holes in the tub floor to access the tops of the rails. Just make sure the chassis remains the same length, else the spring hanger "slope" will change.

A new section will obviate the need/complexity in removing the old shackle plates and bushes.

Me? I'd buy all new swinging shackle plates, and fasteners, and cut the old shackles away. The bushes in the springs should hammer out easier than those in the chassis.

Good luck!
