Why are Land Rovers so...
« on: December 15, 2019, 09:31:57 PM »

Addictive... Is that the right word?

I sold my SIII earlier today (to a fellow club member :tiphat ) because I don't have the time to run a second vehicle especially a classic and yet now, less than 5hours on I'm already looking for a replacement.

Ok I'm looking at something newer that I can use as a daily car, newer being a 110 or Disco1. But I already have a perfectly usable 07plate Fiesta.

So what is it that makes a Land Rover more appealing than a "normal" car?

I know I want one :RHD, I just can't work out why :stars

Because they are not a Fiesta for starters! (I have owned two of the things, so can relate).

I like the car, I found a good low mileage one that drives like new, tight as a drum, grips and goes like a much younger vehicle... It's just missing that certain something (other than class... Or the cool factor  :cool)

There's no logic to it...

If you ever get the answer Neal, let me know.

In a week's time I'll have had my first Land Rover for 51 years, and now have (ahem) one or two........

Are they actually more addictive than other types of vehicle?

I bet someone, somewhere actually owns more than one Austin Metro.:agh

I can't explain it either, though like LR's I have always been drawn to slightly brutish, angular-styled, vehicles such as Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta Integrale. Wait, come to think of it they're all 4WD too! :)

Having owned three SIII's over the years, up until late this year I hadn't owned a LR for well over 10 years but never stopped longingly looking at each one that drove by. When I drove my friends 90 Tdi in August all the feelings came rushing back.....and a big daft grin spread across my face and next thing you know we're on eBay looking for a project. Not regretted it since :)

For me, the love of Land Rovers is the simplicity of their design and their heritage

I thought I was cured. Not had one for 20+ years and then one small taste and yeap back in overalls swearing at why it won't tick over, why its then over running, why it won't stop, why the brakes won't release, why is it leaking oil, why has it stopped leaking oil, I'm sure I fixed that bit a few weeks ago, etc.

I've always had old cars as my daily drivers, including a couple of LandRovers back in the seventies.
For me it's a mixture of affordability, a deep resentment at spending a lot of money on things that depreciate and become worthless, and the sheer joy of owning something well-made and beautiful.

All my cars over the years were design-classics, mostly spotted as such long before everybody else realised it.
I couldn't own a car I didn't love.

It's not just LandRovers.

Through circumstances I was without for longer than that but the yearning never went away and I have been back in the fold for more than 5 years now.

IMO, it's because so much of our surroundings are soul-less and disposable.  They have no "personality".

My toaster makes perfect toast, every time.  So it's not a challenge and it doesn't have a name.  Same with my refrigerator and my TV set.  My motorcycle was like that when new.

Over time my sparkly new motorbike acquired scrapes and improvements, and NOW she has a name.  Now she has a personality.  Now she fights back a little and rewards me when I treat her right.

When my TV quits working I'll just get another.  Same with the other "appliances" in my life.  I had a new Toyota Highlander and it was an appliance too.  It never earned a name.

I'm married to a feisty Italian and wouldn't have it any other way.  She keeps me on my toes and challenges me.  I drive a vintage Rover for the same reasons.

"Unlike most humans, a Land Rover is capable of returning affection."
