WHS ^^^

Marine suppliers/chandlers can usually supply biocide you dose the tank with. You’ll need a few fuel filters too. If you are in the habit of using a jerrycan, then do that as well. I had problems with it a few years back, but the biocide cleared it quickly once I’d worked out what the problem was.

How do you know if you have it?

The engine conking out due to fuel starvation issues is normally the first indication.

I am not certain (it needs more investigation) but I think it is a problem caused by the addition of biodiesel and happens if your vehicle stands for periods of time.

Both our S1s are petrol and if they are left for any length of time the fuel goes "stale" and causes all sorts of problems.  Our answer is to keep the fuel level quite low, use them more often and put a bit of fresh fuel in regularly.

Is it less likely to happen if you use the premium grade diesel fuels which contain extra additives?

It's been an old problem in the boating world, encouraged by the long months of winter lay-up.
It's encouraged by damp, so the advice is to keep the tank topped-up near full as much as possible to minimise surface exposure to damp air. Storage in  cans is less risky because they have proper air-tight seals.

From experience, it is much better to keep the fuel permanently treated with the low-level precautionary stuff than to get to the point where you actually have an attack. The dead bugs form a black suspension which chokes filters. Once you have a bad attack the only option is to drain the system, flush it out, and then refill having circulated the drained fuel through a good external filter, frequently changed as it chokes.

I've had it in an old 110.

Fuel starvation, and I kept swapping lift pumps.  eventually Swapped the lift pump for one which the top can come off and be cleaned out, when it happened again i took the top off the pump and was able to clean the black/green sludge off the gauze.  It took about 6 months from initial starvation issues to diagnosis at this point!  :agh :thud

Treated the tank with about 50x more Biocide than required and new fuel filter

Waited 3 months, checked lift pump (almost clean this time)
treated again with Biocide and new fuel filter

3 months later checked lift pump - clean as a whistle - replaced filter a 3rd time for good measure.

That was 2 years ago and it hasn't recurred (but I still keep a pair of spanners and a dose of biocide in the dash!)

The bug lives in water and feeds on diesel so like already said keep tanks full to stop condensation you end up getting what looks like frog spawn in between the two layers
