Transfer box ID?
« on: January 10, 2020, 07:28:09 PM »

So I am stripping my spare transfer boxes, some have numbers stamped in and some do not.....

The one I have been taking apart this evening has 11/b cast into it?

Any ideas.

I'll get a photo tomorrow.

Most transfer boxes were never stamped - only the top cover of the main gearbox was generally stamped. Some Series 3 gearboxes were stamped on the intermediate casting, but I don't know of any hard or fast rule of when this happened.

Rough transfer box ID can be done on some external features but also on some internal ones too. Freewheel front drive came first with chain pull to lock, then with yellow knob to lock (obviously both 80" S1). 80" Speedo drive is on the 'wrong' side too. With part time 4wd boxes the intermediate shaft diameter increased in size with the introduction of suffix b S2 transfer boxes, then suffix c the low ratio was increased. From then onwards they were largely unchanged - late S3 got ECM gears as with the main box (I think this was suffix D onwards from memory). One ton transfer boxes (all helical) are easily to identify from the outside too.

Could be from anything. Don't think that is a factory marking, or if it is, I doubt it has any meaning in terms of the spec or internals.

It's part of the casting, its proud not engraved, so must be original.

I have spent hours looking for info but can't find any.

It’s probably a foundry reference, scratched into the mould sand. It could well be 9\11.

It’s not air, it’s adjustment.

If that's the case then it was probably scratched into the sand before it was cast. It must have had some relevance to somebody at the foundry, but I doubt it means anything to anyone else!

Never crossed my mind that it could be 9/11.

If it doesn't mean anything there is no reason to not scrap the box then.

Thanks for the replies.

Save the transfer case and offer it to Ashcrofts one of the reasons they are not pushing High Ratio Transfer case is shortage of casings.

Yes, that's why I'm stripping them, I currently have 7, but didn't want to strip one that had some significance.

What do Ashcrofts pay for a casing ???  I may strip a few myself depending on price - all buried deep in garage.

I have a very similar marking in the side of my main gearbox casing, looks like 2A+ to me?
As you say, it is proud of the surface so added before the casting was made in either the mould or the pattern.

Do any of your transfer cases have the word "Marshall" moulded on the lower end near the handbrake?

Craig.
