Hopefully, this will link to some pictures which will illustrate why painting a galvanised chassis is a good idea...

how long has that been sitting out?

Most guardrails here are plain galvanized, and they last forever.
Certainly, they lose that shiny silver finish in a year or so, but even with all the road salt that hits them in Pennsylvania, I can't think of one near here that's ugly.

That's terrible, i can only assume that the 'galv" on these chassis is utter rubbish and done in the cheapest possible way for more Profit... :shakeinghead
I've come across many galvanised objects that have been outside for decades and look fine.
In many ways i like the chap's idea earlier to specify a bare steel chassis and do something else with it, pity they don't still sell those plain painted 88 chassis they used to advertise for about 500 quid !
Just reinforces my suspicion that this whole galv chassis malarkey is very much just a marketing 'catch'...

It's funny how ideas/perceptions change

Original chassis were built with little protection and some lasted decades, new chassis built with thicker metal and galvanised yet people are paranoid they will fall apart in 5 years.

Go to any farm and you will see loads of galvanised stuff that has been exposed to all manner of stuff yet is still fine after 30+ years.

The big issue with most Series these days is they don't get used enough, regular use gets air flowing all around the vehicle.

Lets not forget that is just surface rust on that chassis in the pictures, it's not rot and that is still rock solid

Was it galvanised from new, or galvanised later in its life, or maybe had some zinc-rich paint slapped on it at some stage  ???

Hi,

Many yonks ago, somebody, somewhere, commented that modern cars start to rust as soon as they hear an adverse weather forecast.

But gents razors live in a much more severe environment ... and stay shiny for years. I have not studied lady's leg scrapers.

I work in one of the harshest of places for corrosion the north sea I know of galvanized parts on the deck of fishing boats that are forty years old apart from the loss of shine there is absolutely nothing wrong with them but never ever paint galv unless it has weathered for a year if you have to then use a special wash like T wash or similar and a special metal primer. :tiphat ps I have a galvanized chassis that has been on for about 4or5years no problems I may get round to painting it one day if I do I'll still use a special metal primer first  :tiphat
