OT propeller shaft flexible coupling
« on: February 29, 2020, 12:56:32 PM »

 Longest of long shots.

The starboard propshaft coupling on my boat (upon which I will be living soon) has failed.

Being a 1971 boat of course the coupling is no longer in production.

So knowing that some Land Rover owners also have interests in other fields like obscure machinery and military or agricultural machines, and are prone to hoarding parts for them in lofts/sheds/barns and boxes. I have to ask...

Does anyone have a 3 bolt Metalastik Rubber Disc coupling laying around?
part number 21/642/2

Have a google for a Discovery 2 TD5 rear prop rubber doughnut. It might be just the right size

A look at page 8 suggests they are still available:

Contact details on page 2.

Not entirely surprising - they are commonly used on canal boats - canal holidays became popular around the 1970s so they used similar equipment and there is an ongoing demand.

Bringing it on topic, these people are also a good route to lower cost engine and gearbox mounts.

Doesn't look too dissimilar to the 'Rotoflex' couplings as fitted to some Triumph cars. Another possible source perhaps?

The shaft and gearbox flanges foul the bolt heads going the other way on rotoflex style couplings, the flanges on Imps, Triumphs and Disco/RR shafts are the 3 leg types to allow for them (does that make sense? I have trouble explaining myself clearly sometimes  :-[ )

The type used here the bolt heads are sunk inside the coupling itself to clear the opposite flange.

Those couplings are no longer available... BUT they do supply a close approximation.
Close enough that with a custom spacer it will fit.

A bargain at just £107.54 ea (+ £10.50 postage and VAT)

Better than £300+ for custom made R&Ds

Very much appreciated :tiphat
