I'm not aware of cracked blocks being the main problem.

I remember my brothers 2L engine block,  my grandad stripped it down, it was cracked on the outside,  then in few places inside the crank case area,  across the bearing journal areas!  It's was a real knacker  :-X That was a 1461 engine.

over lockdown I've been stripping my Series 1 2ltr diesel with a view to rebuilding it and replacing it, It's clearly been rebuilt before, the PO tightened the main bearing down onto the dowel which wasn't correctly located. The stress of this fractured no 1 main bearing cap  :agh so when removed it fell into 3 parts. Plenty of missing lock tabs etc. as well.

Why not go for a petrol engine currently on the MOD website? fully recon, currently at £950 plus 30%

because the vehicle was (in my and the OP's case) originally a 2ltr diesel.  In my case it still is, just not the original engine for the reasons above. I hope to return the original engine to it soon once rebuilt. The liners are going to be the most costly part I expect almost everything else I either had already or I've source by buying a spare engine. Just yesterday I received some brand new old stock main bearing shells in the correct  (under) size, still in the original 1960's rover packaging. From a classic car seller in germany, at a fraction of the costs that uk parts suppliers wanted. The parts are out there if you are prepared to hunt for them and be patient.
