Looks, to me, like V8 conversions are acceptable then (as long as its a Rover V8).

i think the big thing is they when it comes to landrover they are more intrested in the defender on series plates , with coil springs , rather than a re used frame , or a slightly updared feraim witha  bit of extra stranthning  , and lets face it to prove its wrong they would need a buid sheet for your land rover , and as we no mostof the paper work is gone ,

i think we have all done work that could be consderd gray as far as re using parts on cars over the years

i get the impressen that as long as some were like the s2club agrees that its a 19XX series land rover of that yeat we are all good , as long as we dont poke the dvla first

I once had an old Triumph where the only "chassis number" was on a brass plate screwed to the wooden instrument panel.
The car was the panel. They were generally a lot longer-lasting then dumb irons, so effectively anything you transferred the speedometer and ignition switch board to became the car. If you bought a bit of wood complete with a cardboard log book you could walk home with the car under your arm.  :)
A friend of mine kept his "spare" car on a shelf in the garage, just in case.

When I started at Austin (BMC) in 1964 none of the vehicles had the  Car Number(VIN) stamped in the body, it was just the plate riveted to the it. Just to confuse things there was also a commission number plate as well . The only exception was vehicles for Germany , which had a special off line operation to hand stamp the number in the body shell floor pan . The operator had a small hydraulic bottle jack with a flat plate on the top which was placed under the floor to support it and small box like jig to insert the relevant stamps. Then bang bang bang with a hammer to complete the operation  .

So we can change the transmission to be more efficient but not the engine? Wonder where that puts the electric conversions that we're likely to be seeing more of in the next 10-15 years. Or do we leave the original engine in, and the electric motor(s) replace the gear box?

^^^ That's a very good question - for another day.

On the face of it you would lose your MoT exemption but keep your Vehicle of Historic Interest status.

In light of the way things are going, the DVLA will have to add a clause to deal with electric motor conversions.
It's coming and we need to lobby the FBHVC to put pressure on the DVLA.

I suspect there are not many, if any, electric Series 2s on the road at the moment ???
