Getting a chassis repaired properly, recommendations?
« on: October 30, 2020, 08:16:20 AM »

I'm now at a point in the restoration of my 1961 Mk6 FFW 88" where I'm looking at getting the chassis repaired.

It doesn't require a huge amount of work, rear cross member, three outriggers and a couple of small patches but I'd like to have it done properly so the repairs are as close to invisible/factory correct as possible.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations for those who could undertake this. I'm in north Wales but have no problem getting the chassis transported (lockdown dependent, obviously).

Thanks,

Matt.

Jim Gardner in the Northwest  Name of the firm escapes my feeble mind for the moment

However, personally, if it was a bog standard I'd get a new galv one from Richards. Fit and forget (as long as it's painted)

Alex
All 5 of ours are still on their original chassis, the newest is 1959 and the oldest 1949, but there again nephew is an artist with a welder.  His day job is shift engineer in a rolling mill that rolls special steels.

I spoke to him last night, they were having problems with the walking floor on one of the furnaces a clevis had burst.  He said the clevis had a pin through it 6 inches in diameter. Repairing that wont be fun, a tight space under the furnace and vey hot too

That’s what happens when you do a good job, with good customer service, at good prices.  :cheers

Thanks all, I'll get in touch with Jim.

I have considered a new chassis, however I'm put off by issues with accuracy that some have experienced. One of my future projects will require a new chassis, but I'm hoping by then there will be more choice of suppliers.

Just to add to Peters post, I have had some welding done by Jim and I couldn’t fault it. Recently a well known member in the Series One Club brought his chassis all the way from Surrey for welding, he collected it a few weeks later and was highly delighted with Jims work.

I am planning to take the chassis of my 1958 (59MY) #6 up to Jim, when I finally get round to starting it

The chassis looks too good to need replacing and, being number 6, is slightly special.
