John Richards surplus store was selling French cans a while back that were clearly stamped "Vin". I believe the French Army received a daily ration....
Didn’t the OxCam expedition vehicles have ‘Gin’ and ‘Tonic’ on their cans? Much more upmarket.

There is some more detail about the adoption & British specifications to the present day:

My mate has cut the side off a can and hinged it to make a mini bar. Quite effective.
He’s good with and angle grinder and survived.

This was the British angle on the uptake from the Army Quarterly 1945

Unless I've missed in some of the links there is no mention of the internal pipe that lets in air as the fuel pours out, so preventing glugging.
Cheap cans don't have them.
Better cans also are galvanised.

Seems the Americans (except the Marine Corps) couldn't empty them quickly enough - so preferred screw caps which leaked!

Yes there is a French vin can.
Also a pair of 2.5 l cans with tray base for vehicle service. Oil and water I believe.
Fb has 8 in Camborne for sale for £30 if your keen.

There were two 5 litre Jerry cans that clipped into a tray base with a can for brush and cloth being sold off by Anchor Supplies about twenty years ago in vast quantities.
They are East German (DDR) issue for vehicle de-contamination and some of the chemicals in the residue in the can are not very pleasant.
We had a discussion about them on the old forum with the German chap who was restoring the West German Border Guard Land Rover translating the markings.
Please do not drink water that has been in one of those cans unless it has been very thoroughly cleaned out.
I have one somewhere, if I can find it, I will post a picture. They are distinctive.
They were sometimes being incorrectly identified as WW2 Wehrmacht issue on parts of the interwob.

Found the DDR decontam kits on the Interwob

Here is a site wrongly identifying them but with better pictures.

If I remember correctly Anchor Supplies were selling them as a complete kit for £5 and individual 5L jerries for £3 when I got mine.

I don't think galvanising Jerry cans is such a good idea.

OK for most fluids but definitely not for diesel, there is a chemical reaction  :shakeinghead

^^^ Nor that suggestion in the original article that the plastic liner made them usable for water afterwards.... I doubt it would be possible under field conditions to remove the taint of petrol sufficiently to make it a worthwhile exercise.

I have a set just like that but the two jerry cans are 5 litres I think.   ???

I also have a few stainless steel 20 litre cans of the normal design which get around any rusting issues!   :cheers

For the UK Mil at least we had black plastic jerry cans for water (at least in the 90s and they were looking worn so I'm guessing started in the 80s at least). Had a large screw cap at one end and a vent screw at the other. This was so you didn't cross mix fluids. That said we used to *&%^$ in them so you still had to be careful.

Green & black plastic jerricans for water first appeared in 1965.
