Insurance and Mods.....

Insurance and Mods.....

Insured my SII today, told them it's in bits right now, and I was getting a galve chassis that's why it was in bits, but it still needs insurance (unless SORN) so I told them it was worth 25k when done... (yea I know!) they quoted me £190 I asked why so high, they said "It's been modified" I asked how, and he said the chassis is galvanised........  :-X :-X Yea I know!!!

When I was  rebuilding mine. I had laid up insurance. The landrover is insured but because it couldn't be used on the road as it was in bits. It was only £35 per year with NFU. I have only just changed it to normal insurance this month. Best quote was Footman James. I informed them  of all the modifications. There was no extra cost for these items.

No insurer told me my Series 3 was modified when I declared the new galvanized chassis in 1997. I've changed insurers several times since and none have said it's modified either.
Sounds odd to me. Who's the insurer?

I got told my galv chassis is a modification too this year.
Not sure why but I guess it increases the theft risk as the crims know it has been rebuilt and will be easier to strip down?

Or it’s the first guaranteed £1000 second hand on ebay/Facebook etc!!

Another shout for Footman James, all mine are listed with modifications, mainly engines doesn’t seem the affect the price, i think they just want to know what they are insuring and expect/accept that classic cars do have owners that will tinker and upgrade bits, all part of the hobby, ownership and charm I suppose…

Years ago I had the mini insured with Lancaster, they would allow you 10 free modifications before it affected the policy price, they even had a tick list form with the 20 or so most popular modifications you just picked out what was the named category, ie wheels, carb, manifold, exhaust etc etc very good service, not sure if it’s still the same? Been with FJ for a good few years now……

Just insured the FC with Footman James. Advised the only modification was the fitment of a rear mounted hydraulic crane. Premium was £126.63 for the year, including agreed valuation and  2000 miles a year.
Calum.

Keep my S3 with Adrian Flux- “has it been modified?”  Well Carmichael made it into an ambulance when it was new,St johns changed it about a bit, I’m making it into a camper so changed again. Yep all that’s fine plus a galv bulkhead with no worries. Can’t fault them.

I had mine insured with Lancaster for the 15 years I had it. After a couple of years I fitted a galvanised chassis and decided to go for agreed value so dutifully gave a full description of what I’d done - chassis, new clutch, brakes etc etc. They came back to me wanting to put up the premium by a fair percentage ( on what was still a relatively small amount). I was very annoyed at a new chassis being classed as a modification but paid up in the end with an agreement that they’d reduce the premium if I renewed the next year. Just confirmed my long standing dislike of the insurance industry and how they operate.
