OT The King William’s College General Knowledge Paper 2020
« on: December 25, 2020, 08:52:37 PM »

As a school child I had the misfortune to attend King William's College for a couple of years.
Every Christmas was spoilt by the School's infernal General Knowledge Paper you had to research the answers to during the holiday,
so as to sit the Quiz as a written paper in the first week of the January Term.
If you scored below a certain percentage you got detention.
https://www.kwc.im/general-knowledge-quiz
Answers will be published at the end of January.

Here you go, spoil your Christmas Holiday with the Full GKP attached;

For a sample, here is Section 1 of 18

1 During 1920 :
1   who depicted five ladies plane-spotting?
2   what, tragically, foundered on the reef of Roche Bonne?
3   which Boston financier’s eponymous scheme was shown to be fraudulent?
4   where did the Gay highwayman embark on a marathon of over 1400 appearances?
5   in what did Capt. Hastings recall his sick leave in Essex at John Cavendish’s invitation?
6   who was buried among the kings because he had done good toward God and toward His house?
7   whose advocacy of a return to normalcy secured a move to Hoban’s famous creation?
8   what sobriquet arose from the provision of khaki trousers to go with green tunics?
9   who was sent off on his first marketing trip for honey, fruit and eggs?
10   who introduced our Gallic neighbours to Fred Peloux?

The first year I had to do the quiz (aged 10) I scored one in the whole thing.
(There was a complete section on French Vineyards that year)

BTW I don't drink lager!  :neener

It's nice just to get one right .... object is to avoid the detention.

It's good to have some proper questions, we've become conditioned to the pap on day time telly quiz shows, though I do like the revived Supermarket Sweep. Do people really shop like that - yes, I think they do.

IIRC they still flog people on the Isle of Mann, so best to get a few right.

My Father attended KWC around the 1930's; the topic has prompted me to initiate research into the exact dates.

By the time his children arrived the family home was no longer in the IoM, so none of them attended KWC.
As I recall it, each test paper was sat twice. Once 'cold', with no preparation, then again after the holidays, when pupils were instructed to do research. I have no doubt the questions now reflect the more advanced research facilities available today.

What might be of interest to family groups is to select the questions set in earlier years, so the family have both questions and answers available. Follow the link in the first post and scroll down for the years 2016 to 2019.

You can easily get the Q&A for 2010 onwards in the online Archive of the Manchester Guardian.
From The MG "Until 1999, the quiz was compulsory, with 300 pupils aged between 11 and 18 having to answer the 100 cryptic questions in a set time - the average score being two."
2010 Questions.
2010 Answers.

Regards.

The Birch has not been used in the Isle Of Man since 1976.
I believe there are no forms of Legal Corporal Punishment left.
Capital punishment was abolished in 1993.

The system was still the same in my era.
Sit it cold, ruin your holiday researching, sit it again, get punished for not improving enough !

GKP also gets published in The Isle of Man Examiner (but without the speelung mistackes  :-X )
