If it's currently taxed then don't bother. It's only when you use it on the road or retax it the insurance is compulsory. If the tax runs out before you insure it again then you'll have to declare SORN.

seems to suggest that lack of insurance DOES require SORN.

Whether anyone would notice.........?

It takes seconds to do so why not, if you know it'll not be getting used.  Similarly quick to "tax" it when you need it again.

...assuming its zero-rate tax anyway ?

Hi 13/60.

They don't need to notice ... the computer will snitch as soon as the free VED, or insurance expires.

My understanding is if the insurance or an MOT expires, the VED expires too.

I read something, but a long time ago, that "whoever" has the power to enter your premises, and sieze your illegal vehicle.

Just because you truck is VED exempt, does not mean they will not prosecute. Any penalty will consist of both a fine, and a demand for back-tax (going back six years). I believe the fine can be quite heavy if you are a repeat offender, although there will be no back-tax liability ... unless (I suspect) your truck has only recently become VED exempt. I have no authority to make that staement.

Hi Moogling,

Check your policy (not the certificate) for LAID UP cover. But don't forget when you put it back on the road.

Unless the money situation is tight, why bother over the saving of a few pounds.

Renew the insurance (classic Land Rover insurance is cheap enough) messing around phoning for "laid-up" cover just takes up your time.

When you are out and about again your Land Rover will be ready to go - no need to bother "taxing", de-SORNing or insuring...

If money is tight do the "paperwork jiggle" but I wonder just how  much money you'll save ???

DVLA and the Motor Insurance Database  (MID)  do a comparison and  penalties issued if taxed & no insurance.   Insurance is mandatary  if Taxed .   If on SORN no insurance required .

If it is taxed DVLA make the assumption that it is being used on the road.

This is the reason why we only inspect land rovers that look roadworthy when someone is applying for an age related registration through the V55/5 scheme as it now includes the first tax.

Hi,

People have been "done" for "No Tax". or "No SORN", even when their car is in a locked garage. I have "done" cars myself, in the bad old days. Sorry, it was my job, (DVLA, 1962 to 1985) so no other option.

Check your insurance POLICY for REFUNDS ... the % of refund drops rapidly, possibly zilch after 6 months.

So look for LAID UP POLICY ... you may be able to transfer the true balance to your next car, yonks in the future.

Or what's the chances of "the sky falling" on your car while stored, or it being stolen. Maybe it's worth letting the policy run.

I think there will be something in your policy about LAID-UP cover, which (I think) will cover theft and third-party claims by a Clefti-wallah who injures himself while try to half-hitch your motor. I'd anticipate a much lower premium ... you can only ask.

If you do not yet have FULL NCD, this years bonus will be lost if you do not let it run the full.

Your insurance may cover your garage against fire, or WHY.

You may be insured to drive vehicles that you do not own ... useful sometimes ... but it will be TPO.

I doubt that bit has any refund value (come back and tell us), so either change it to laid up cover, or let it ride.

READ YOUR POLICY.
