OT - Are tractors getting bigger?
« on: February 03, 2021, 02:27:42 PM »

Is it just me, or are tractors getting bigger? Minor roads round here have as little as 8ft width of tarmac and from what I can find "large tractors" are designated legal for normal road use up to 2.55metres (8ft 4"). Verges and ditches are getting destroyed and tarmac is breaking away from the edges and getting worse in the wet weather. Field gates are no longer wide enough to take these tractors, unless you take a swing at it, leaving huge ruts.
Maybe it is more noticeable because the council are no longer keeping up with repairs ??? (and possibly because I am walking more at the moment)

Do they need to be so wide? Is it an H&S thing to make them more stable? Am I ranting? >:D

Indeed they are Worf!!

There's some monstrous tractors thundering up and down our "B" road.  One of them hit my parked SII, bent the front bumper onto the front wheel (rendering my vehicle undriveable), and bent some body panels.

The blighter didn't stop, but I knew it was a tractor by the tyre rubber left on the bumper.  There was no way an ordinary car could have caused the damage.....

Evidently they have such huge wheels & tyres to "spread the load" and prevent too much damage to the land.  Huh!!

If it does, its a lie!
Good thing was nobody got hurt and aside from a somewhat embarrassed Dog Section blue light driver having to fill out a lot of paperwork, it all ended well.

With the big boys fitted, my mog comes in at 2.5 metres. Great fun to drive on an A road let alone a B!

I told you before... I want it!
I bet your neighbours really love you when you go out to play.
Round here the problem is that we have so many sunken lanes - once you are committed, there's no escape as our erstwhile plod found out to his cost...

What scares me, isn't the size of the tractors, it's the fact that many of the drivers aren't far into long trousers. Can't you drive one of those at 16? How does that work when you can't tow anything bigger than a 750kg trailer behind a car without having done a test?. So you can happily pull 10+ tonnes behind a 6 tonne tractor on a provisional licence? Is that still the case?

I think that still the case, 16 years old, 250 horse tractor towing 20 tonnes. When I was that age, Id been driving allsorts off road for 6 years ! OK tractors were smaller, but even so. For goodness sakes, my Dad bought me my first shotgun  when I was 9 , because I had outgrown the .22 BSA meteor air rifle !

Changed days.

Yes, around here probably as many tractors as cars, and they are big, just try cycling !   Its hedge cutting time too, oh great fun.

Hi

They been getting bigger for years lol.
From less than 6' wide, like my fordson major to over 8' wide today.
Well since the 80s with some tractors even that wide or wider then.
