OT----Camp lamp
« on: February 20, 2021, 12:31:00 AM »

I've decided to go old school with my emergency/camp lamp. I am getting off the battery train and away from Coleman lanterns. I bought a hurricane oil lamp. I wanted an American brand Dietz, but found out they are made in China. So gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle led me to a German made brand Feurhand. www.lanternnet.com

The story is on my blog; https://poppageno.blogspot.com/2021/02/camp-lamp.html

Can't load a pic...... Oh well they all look the same anyway.

The hiss of a High Pressure Paraffin lamp is part of the sound-track of my youth.  Somehow they psychologically added a bit of heat to proceedings...

A bit more hi-tech than a simple wick ?

I have some of the old Dietz lamps as well, from the '40s - '60s.  Oldest lamp I have - for outdoor use (and I do use it) - is a pre-WWI Stonebridge folding lantern that can use either candles or oil.

I grew up with Tilley lamps when boating. You could fit a different attachment with a parabolic reflector and it became a very effective directional radiant heater. I think the mantle was different - the light mantle gave a sharp bright white light, the heating mantle was redder.

I think oil lamps suit land rovers quite well.
Pressure lamps are lovely, warm, bright and a reassuring hiss but I always seem to break the mantles, especially in the back of a land rover.
Obviously nothing beats a head torch for efficiency and oil lamps hardly give out any light, but they do add a certain something.  ???
(This one is Feurhand hand by the way, but I'm keeping my eyes open for an old Chalwyn)

The mantle for lighting is made of silk or asbestos (I think), impregnated with various chemicals - used to be radioactive!!
As said, very fragile once activated for use.

The heating 'mantle' is a steel mesh which glows red instead of white. I've got a couple of camping gaz heaters somewhere, with reflectors, and a very nice pressure heater similar to this one, which I will restore one day!  :cheers
