OT--what is this?
« on: February 21, 2021, 03:33:45 AM »

Friend of mine in Monterey, Calif. sent me this. He thought it was a S1 :agh :thud Pretty sure it's a Defender 90, but I don't have enough experience with them to say it's not a MOD of some type.  RHD.

The photo is not quite clear enough to be sure, but I'm pretty sure that's a Series 2 or early 2A. If it was a 90, it would have wheel arch eyebrows. Also its got the old LR badge on the back. My guess - its one that should be in the Club!

That’s an unusual rear light cluster.

The light clusters look ok like Mini van ones.

Number plate doesn't come up on tax checker site, however I inadvertently put in 7808AD and it came up as a fordson manufactured in 1960.
Edit - I was going to say the same thing, mini van or clubman estate.

'AD' reverse format comes up as Gloucestershire, January 1960. So yes, it is a Series 2 that has obviously been exported at some time.

The lights aren't Mini Van, could be early Mini Pickup/ Rover P4

I think they are trailer lights.

Gotta admit it was the lights that threw me. I don't recognize them either. It is parked in front of a repair shop.

Those lights were pretty common on trailers during the ‘70’s
The vehicle is from what I can see a series 2 (3 bolt, wide gusset tailgate) and if the plate is original it would date it to probably very late 1960 as Gloucester issued AD in reverse from number 100 from Jan 1960 followed by reverse DD from April ‘61.

UPDATE;

One of the Mendo forum members talked with the shop owner "......this Series is apparently messier than it appears... frame is falling apart, electrics minimal, and interior as mentioned is shot. The truck does run and is drivable down the street - that's it. The owner owes 1800 in repairs from a year ago, and has essentially gone into a dark hole....."

Further pics show it to be a S2 pickup cab.

If they can legally sell it to recoup the money owed $1800 or so would be a bargain either side of the "pond".
