Deluxe bonnet on Series 2?
« on: September 23, 2019, 01:42:05 PM »

Hi, would I be making a mistake by putting a deluxe bonnet on a 1959 Series 2?

It would have originally been an option on an 88 or standard on a 109.

Whatever you choose to do, it’s your vehicle, your choice  :cheers

Does it have a spare wheel recess or is it plain.  I think the latter looks better.

It's a plain one, with no spare wheel recess!

Out of interest is there any difference e.g. weight carrying ability etc between a razor and deluxe bonnet apart from the looks?

I had a plain deluxe on my S3, bit preferred the look of the original one.
It has a no recessed wheel carrier. wheel fitted to the Bonnet.

Should suit 88 and 109.  I dont like spares on the bonnet, mainly because it makes lifting for fluid checks a maul.

The deluxe is a thinner gague aluminium to allow the more complex forming, as far as I am aware the under frame is identical.

I fitted a deluxe with wheel carrier because I could not open the rear door to get passengers in and out with a trailer on. The spare wheel got in the way!
I will not be changing it back having given the razor one away.

There's no extra bracing to the bonnet frame - if that's what you mean. AFAIK there is no difference to the "weight" carrying spec between the various bonnet options.
Indeed, later production bonnet hinges were cut down to 3 bolts each - saving BL money ??? and not affecting the spare wheel carrying.

The deluxe bonnet was standard on a Series 2a 109? I have a deluxe bonnet on my 1964 Series 2a. I always thought that deluxe bonnets were the standard on Series 3 and the "razor"-type bonnets were standard on Series 2(a)…
the original bonnet of my Series 2a (razor) was at some time

It would have originally been an option on an 88 or standard on a 109.

I think they went standard on s3 from early 80's

My 88 has a razor edge from factory and is a 70's example.

The station wagon may have had them earlier as a cost option.

I think it depends where your spare could or should be stuffed in on the model that was manufactured in the factory, that does not stop the interchangeability years down the line.

The late 2a 109 station wagon has a deluxe bonnet with rear door mounted spare.
