I think the wear on a 50 year old gear knob is just beautiful.

Having recently refurbished the gear knobs on my Series 2 and 57 series 1 I noted the series one knob had a brass inserted for the ½” BSF thread.  Whereas the series 2 knob is simply plastic / Bakelite.  Not sure when the change occurred, but would imagine the brass one would be more robust?

I would leave the patina on the original and get a new one from eBay. If you really want a new looking that is.
If I understand correctly, some sellers offer nos (Santana) ones. They’re about 30£.
I personally have finally decided to stick with the almost 60 year old original as it is one of the parts where you can see how and how long the Landy has been worked.

I mistakenly thought that the lines between the numbers had worn off mine but of course there are no such joining lines  :thud

Patina is important ...

You could run some TipeX into the number engravings and wipe the excess away ???

But on most 50 yr old knobs half the numbers will have been worn away - which is part of its history.

If you want a factory restoration then you'll have to buy a new reproduction knob.

Else, just buff it up with some restoring wax treatment  :cool

Here is my 1958 knob buffed up ...  :first

... and here is a brand new knob:-

So shiney you can see your face in it!

The reproduction knobs are cast from a different, harder plastic than the originals.
I think they will be durable enough to withstand at least 100 years of gear changing  :cheers

Muddy hands are the enemy of nice shiny gear knobs and steering wheels.

So if you like them shiny - clean hands only!

Hello to South Wales

my opinion:
My car got a lot of Patina
This is really historic brought to him since 1961

I`m not the guy who want to have a "blingbling" nuts and bolts restored Vehicle.

restore not refurbish is my aim

sorry for OT

Out of interest, did the brown ones start off as red or black?

The ones that look brown were originally made in red phenolic, which is almost maroon when new.
