Many years ago I bought a Defender unseen from a Land Rover specialist (I use the term loosely) in Telford.

When I went to collect it I had to drop a hire car back nearby so they followed me in the Defender. I could hear the gearbox howling from the hire car. Their solution was to fill the gearbox with slick 50 or similar. Unsurprisingly it didn’t magically transform all the knackered bearings into new ones again and it still howled worse than ever so they had it straight back.
