Yep, a IIA 88" was used as a pathfinder vehicle. Rolled away to be scrapped at the end.

Hi,

My reading of the Darian Gap thingy, in "Workhorse", was that a Range Rover was (to be?) the hero, and the Series was a support vehicle.

Workhorse?  As in 'Aluminum Workhorse'?

From what I've been reading it does seem like the RR was to be the hero, but ended up.being the damsel in distress tied to the train tracks.

Mpudi: So how did the land rover get up the tree?
Steyn: Do you know she has flowers on her panties?
Mpudi: So that's how it got up the tree.

The Trans Americas expedition wasn't really a Land Rover expedition. They supplied the vehicles but it was run by the British Army. Not sure it is fair to call it a "Land Rover publicity stunt"
The British Army approached Land Rover with the view to borrowing some new, late IIA 109" and Land Rover saw it as a good opportunity to try out the then, one year old Range Rover.

According to John Carroll the Range Rover team were very impressed with the vehicles and didn't think they were anything but perfectly suited to the task. The Range Rover team apparently agreed from the start with the Land Rover team that the swamp tyres were a waste of time and the vehicles were overloaded..... Of course, being a military operation they probably couldn't argue their views too strongly with the higher ranks.

Hi Craggie,

"Sir, do you consider yourself as my equal?"

"Yes!"

"Well treat me like one!"
