Glyn Lewis R.I.P.
« on: April 25, 2021, 06:14:23 PM »

My good friend Glyn Lewis passed away peacefully at home today.
Glyn started his own Land Rover repair business in Marden, Herefordshire, after completing his National Service in the RAF. He had a house with several acres of land attached, left to him by his adoptive parents. When I came to Herefordshire 24 years ago, I had Landys and was immediately sent to see Glyn. He had at least two acres of broken Land Rovers, as well as the repair business. In those days people brought their scrap Landys to him because they knew the parts would be put to good use. He was a very skilled engineer who could turn his hand to anything. He was heavily involved, in those days, with the All Wheel Club, making projects and organising runs and rallys in aid of many charities. There are many members of this forum who will have parts on their vehicles which came either directly from Glyn, or via myself. He was the font of Land Rover knowledge, and would spend hours on the telephone giving free advice to anyone who needed it. I would expect the business to continue in the hands of his apprentice of 25 years. I shall miss those endless phone calls whilst he explained something to me, or wanted me to look something up on the internet.      I have lost a really good friend.

I only spoke to Glyn once, it was about parts. What struck me was his generous offer of time and advise and I recognised that this was a real gent. May he rest peacefully.

A very sad day indeed Rob.
I met Glyn, and yourself,  for the first time nearly 20  years ago when I treated my wife Julia to a days off roading tuition when you were helping him with the lessons.
Whenever I came over to see him, either to buy parts or for some free advice, I always made sure to allow at least an hour to make
sure I could listen to his forever interesting stories, even to the point that I left there once without the part that I'd gone there for.
I'm sure that his "apprentice" Adrian will continue to run the business in the same vein that its always been run in, but the likes of Glyn we're unlikely to find again.
My deepest condolences to both you and Sue as I know how much he mean't to you.
Many thanks for letting us all know.
Graham.

Hi,

I didn't know Glyn, but I feel the loss to the club.

OT. I signed on, in the RAF. in mid August 1958. Ours was the last RAF intake of National Servicemen ... thereafter, everybody was a Regular. Presumably, the army were still taking conscripts. I don't know if those who were deferred (University, etc) got away with it, or had to join the army when their deferment ended.

Strangely, the RAF asked me "When would you like to come?"  I understand the RAF got "first dibs".

My condolences to Glyn's family.

Sorry for your(our) loss. I've heard the name, but never met. My best to his family.

That is very sad the hear. I first met him over probably 40 years ago when we came down from Eastnor ,where MROC were running a LR trial. My mate had broken a shackle bolt and needed a spare and we were pointed in Glyns direction . We came away with more than enough to affect a repair.

Very sad news Rob.

I met Glyn when buying some parts last year.   He was a true gent and made be feel most welcome when I met him.   His extensive and generous knowledge of Land Rovers all types including the rare early 2 litre Diesel I am sure will be missed by all.      May he rest peacefully and condolences to Glyn's family.

That’s very sad news, I had the pleasure of meeting Glyn on a number of occasions and found him to be a great guy.

Found this today, probably a couple of years old. The dog is Archie, who adored Glyn. He has a great new home already.  :tiphat
