How much load?
« on: September 28, 2019, 11:09:10 PM »

What is the safe working load for a 88" Rag Top?

Looking to pick up 1 Tonne of soil (in a bag) and wondered if I could put it in The Sister?

Cheers,

I think you'll find that's a bit much tbh... ;).  I once went to a builders mechant and got them to tip sand / ballast slowly in the back ( truck cab fitted)  until i said "woah"...i watched the back go down on the springs until I felt enough was enough...I'd say it was well before I'd reached the ton bag stage !

1 tonne is way too much  :shakeinghead

You'll break something, if not actually lifting the front wheels off the ground.

My official Land Rover technical spec book says the maximum payload for a SWB model is 3 persons plus 1000lbs - that's 454 kg in new money.

Therefore, the practical max payload would be 500 kg or ½ tonne and I would advise driving cautiously....

If you're too ambitious you may find the doors fly open

The least of your problems, if you try a ton in a SWB.. :shakeinghead

You can tow far more than you can carry, trailers the answer but they are always in the way when not in use.

I'd pay the extra five quid and have it delivered.

Bulk bags generally don’t weigh 1 tonne, unless very wet.
Usually nearer 3/4 tonne

Still way more than 454Kg.
Forget about possible damage to chassis/suspension, if the blue lights appear when you’re loaded like that expect to be uplifted to a weighbridge, where the fun will really start.

Thank you all for those comments.  I thought that was going to be the answer but just thought I would ask.

Getting down our driveway can be tricky, especially for a reversing lorry so tipping and Tonne sacks are not an option.  There is no way IO would manage a trailer in reverse let alone down the drive.

May see if I can find a place that will load in loose and go for 250Kg or so.  Alternatively go to the Garden Centre and get 20Kg bags  :agh

Cheers

When i got some loaded loose into the back it was just a normal builders merch, can't recall exactly but probably one of the travis perkins or similar types, the lads in the yard were happy enough to do this, tho was probably 5 yrs ago , (obviously elfansafety madness gets worse all the time  :shakeinghead. )
Worth asking at your local ones anyway
