A Barn Find - Selling?
« on: August 04, 2021, 01:18:23 PM »

Hullo!

I've just joined and have been meaning to for years as I was expecting to be restore my 1959 2 1/4 litre petrol SWB Full Tilt. A turn of events means that I'm now going to consider selling and I'm hoping for some advice.

The vehicle has been stored in a dry and warm garage in London for 40 years without any usage and is therefore effectively in 'barn find' condition. It was working perfectly well and MOT'd when stored.

Simply, how/where should I advertise it? Would 'Trading Post' here be the best place? Ebay?

All advice would be welcome!

Many thanks

Ian

Try selling it here first. I sold my S3 through the club last month. Selling on Ebay will bring you no end of idiotic questions and general time wasters (all in my opinion of course :tiphat)
Get some pics up. We like pics

    &  to the Forum.

The 1st and most important thing is:- Does it have any paper work ?
Registration document etc.

Can you see the chassis number on the dumb iron ?

This will help elevate your vehicle from a pile of parts to something of value.
If the vehicle can be restored and put back on the road with no hassle from the DVLA - then you have something.

Hello Ian and welcome. Take some pictures and post them up here as well, give people an idea of what you are talking about. ( use the "attachments " tab below, keep them to 300Kb or less or the site will think they are too big...)

Hullo again, and many thanks for the useful advice so far. I'll be taking some photos in a day or so and will post here.

I do have the documentation but it's in my late Father's name, he died in 1999. I suppose that could be a problem, I haven't got a clue what to do about it though. (I paid for the vehicle but it was always registered to my Father to cheapen the insurance.)

Change of owner to you should be just a question of sending the V5 back to DVLA with you as the new keeper.  Easier to sell if things like that are in order first ?

Might be helpful to get in contact with the clubs vehicle registrations officer.

^^^^ Yep, but before that plug it in to the DVLA vehicle check site. If it all shows up nicely then you have no worries. If its not on their database then the VRO can help.

Unfortunately the vehicle isn't on the DVLA database, it was stored too long ago. I suppose I'll have to try and register it with them. I'm scratching my head now...

Before you doing anything I would strongly suggest you talk to the club's Vehicle Registration Officer and DO NOT contact or write to DVLA about the vehicle. There is a way of getting a registration and Peter is best placed to guide you through the minefield. To arttemptcit without his guidance is fraught with pitfalls and potential unforseen consequences.

Thirded!   Peter has just helped me with getting DVLA to correct a mistake on my V5 that seems to date back to 1984, when it was "Cast" by the Army...

Do you propose joining the Club, the membership secretary gently hinted :-)

Do NOT under any circumstances contact or enter into any dialogue with the DVLA, until you have spoken to our VRO.

Your vehicle will have to be inspected by one of our inspectors under peter's guidance - then the process can start.

If not, or you go it alone the vehicle is likely to be rejected by the DVLA and will only be worth parts/scrap.

Many thanks to all, the advice is truly appreciated. I get the message, it looks like I'm going to have to join so as to have the services of the VRO. What an irony, joining the owners club in order to sell the vehicle!
