I have never seen one but it looks very like the one in the optional parts catalogue for June 1968 2A on LH drive models.  Lock is 551463. wires 575113 , column 577184

Thanks!!!   :tiphat

So it's off to the side.  For some reason I was thinking it was in-line and could figure 'how' in my mind.

Intrigued as to why it was only available for LHD petrol vehicles. Didn't anybody steal RHD petrol vehicles or LHD and RHD diesel vehicles?

Looks like it has its own unique steering column, so that must have been an expensive option

Probably for some legislation in certain countries.

Something just dawned on me... the little key part that is inside the collar that clamps onto the column (pics 2 & 3)... wouldn't there need to be some sort of female aspect built into the inner steering column for it to work?  I have a LHD and I purchased a NOS LHD inner column for mine and there wasn't anything for that 'key' to slide into.  Wonder if a special column was also needed or if it just shoved up against the thing.

Its a different part number to a standard column so I reckon its a variation of a S3 column.

Hi,

I fitted an S3 diesel steering lock to one of my rebuilds.

Yes, there is a "bolt" that can be projected through a hole in the outer column, and then into a hole in the inner column, to stop it turning,

Memory is vague, but I think the  bolt stays where it is until the holes line up.

BUT the area around the bolt projects slightly into the outer column, to give positive location. I simply angle-ground the spigot off. Unfortunately, the diesel engine fuel cut-off cable is too short to be used as a choke.

If ever I build another project, I will fit an S3 column complete, which will give me lockable steering, and the choice of various steering wheels (Range Rover, possibly MGB, and a range of after-market "boy-racer" aluminium steering wheels. I suspect that the COMPLEAT AUTOMOBILIST have a range of three (and even four) wire spoke steering wheels that could be fitted to an S3 column.

The Series 3 ignition switch/steering lock is unobtainable. The only source I've found is Pegasus who refurbish them. I've got one as a spare but they're not cheap.

Hi Neil,

I wonder if they were all bought by S2 owners who wanted to upgrade.

Personally, my main interest was in having "KEY START", without having to mutilate the dash panel.

I can't recall ever seeing a Series 3 column/steering lock retro fitted to a Series 2  :shakeinghead

I suppose it might be done if someone was fitting an S3 column & steering box. But people tend to grind off the lug for the S3 column switch.

Part of the charm driving Series 2s is the fact that you need to go through certain actions to start the engine, petrol or diesel.

As for security ... see the current topic on the subject.
