Folding Bonnet prop or stay
« on: January 06, 2022, 11:57:00 AM »

Folding Bonnet prop or stay, as fitted to a 11a
I've only ever seen these fitted to the drivers side (UK RHD)
Was there another model/part number that fitted to the other side ???
I ask as with a 200tdi fitted and the battery in the original position but mounted higher to clear the engine I'm unable to use the standard prop and as the standard prop is bent and has mountings for that side it wont fit on the other side and I wondered if another part number overcomes this problem

The series one, 86" had a very similar stay but mounted on the left side of the vehicle.
You can see it on these photos of my 1955 one.
(I don't think the bracket on the wing should be that shape either, I think it has been mutilated by a previous owner!)

Here's my simple and cheap solution - a length of broom handle.

The white tape in the middle us set at 20" = max wading depth.
On one end I have fixed a Chinese super magnet so the prop can act as a metal parts retriever.

I like it because I can tip the bonnet right back to the screen when I want better access to the engine bay.

When not in use it lies across the top of the rad panel.

Probably too late for you, but I lift the battery tray and move it away from the wing a couple of inches on my 200TDi mods.

That leaves room for the stay, though if you're fitting the Disco/Defender rad with in-built oil cooler the pipes can get in the way!

Okay... I have the standard folding stay, but as you mentioned, it doesn't allow a lot of clearance.  Have been wondering about adding "broom handle" as well AND leaving it in same place you do.  Question... how are you securing it to the top, so it's not moving while driving?

And it doesn't bounce around?

Looks like yours can also extend out, is it telescopic?

No, it's magic, a magic wand.

Wave it around and the oil leaks just disappear  :tiphat

As posted, I like to open the bonnet back to the screen for superb access to the engine bay.

 :-\
Word of warning:

Not shown in my picture. I have a length of rope with a loop in one end.
The loop is passed over the bonnet plunger over the roof and tied off on the rear cross member.

This stops the wind blowing the bonnet closed and killing you!

It's not such a faff, takes but a few seconds to secure the bonnet.

^^^^
I open my bonnet up like that sometimes. I hook bungee cord inside the door and stretch across and hook inside the other door to keep it in place. I also stick a mat over the wipers to protect both them and the bonnet.

Another advantage that you haven't mentioned is that presumably it can be used on either side, so keeping the other side clear for whatever one was doing?

True, but I'd probably just push it back and hold with the rope.
