Simple things amuse simple minds.
« on: October 07, 2019, 02:36:24 PM »

I was the recent recipient of a deceased friends nut and bolt collection.

Very sad but as they said, better to go to someone who will potentially use them rather than throw them away.

Rummaging away reflecting on the former owner I found a bunch of what I think are vehicle keys.

They are what I would call factory not copies.  Some are marked Rootes with a chrysler emblem on the other side.

The one that really stood out was what looked like a universal tractor plant key, that you may have seen marked lucas and has an elliptical head.

This however had the ford oval for the head and the familiar ford flowing font.  Is it too a tractor key or for a very old ford car?

Looks like the usual "plant" type key but with a ford logo...

So it was never used in the ye olde cars?

I recall fords of the 1970's 1980's could be opened and started with almost anything.

Mk1 fiesta tailgate with a 1 pence piece.  This I should say was done for amusement not criminal activity.

I had an ignition key that was for a bedford cf that would open and start, my mates mk2 escort van, mk3 carpi, and mk1 fiesta.  Also my dads marina and his other cf!

Only when ford went to the keys that looked like allen keys did the fun cease.

No, but my old diesel S2A had the usual Lucas tractor oneversion under the dash as well as the "electrical auxiliaries" switch in the bottom middle of the dashboard.

In the spirit of the original poster’s donor, I inherited my dad’s trays of nuts and bolts over thirty years ago. He had always meant to “sort them properly one day”, and I have always meant to do the same...

If I ever manage to find the time to do so, then I’ll know that my work on this earth is complete.

I strongly suspect that my son will inherit them, still unsorted, and will in turn spend several decades rifling through them occasionally in search of an appropriate fastener for the latest project.

I have a similar predicament.

Tins and trays of miscellaneous nuts and bolts collected over the years from who knows where ???

The question is, how best to do it ?

I'd need some sort of egg box to put big, small and little into as a first sort through.
Nuts, bolts & washers ...
And then examine each set to identify size/thread form.

It's a massive worry.....

I inherited a load of similar in old tobacco tins, I've got a vague idea of what's there, and they are very useful on occasion, I also must id them properly and label them..

Hi,

Our RAF S2 diesels on MY SAM site, at RAAF Butterworth needed two keys to start them, but memory fails, so I cannot say what the second key did ... but it was a very basic bit of kit .... similar, but not the same, as the key being discussed.

I inherited my grandfather’s nut and bolt collection back when I was living in a room in a shared house. In those dim and distant days before the internet, and having no television, I entertained myself by taking boxes of bolts back from my parents’ place where I kept them to sort them all out. They are now sat at my house, neatly sorted by thread and size, and I still end up going to the local bolt shop instead  :thud

Aha! nuts and bolts

This is the 'sorted' side of the collection --- lots more in various tins and lin bins
