One trick I've heard of is to put a plastic bag over the filter bowl once you have loosened the bolt.
You then undo the bolt through the plastic and catch the filter bowl in the bag.

No oil will be split ...

 :oil spill

I'll try that next time, thanks

Isn't that what apprentices are for? If you haven't got one of those, I find a small child works well. There's also less surface area to clean up...

Not sure if that's legal these days, but I'm all for it. :coffee

Went down a couple of green lanes just for something to do, as I was board  :tiphat

Does that mean you're a bit of a plank, then?  :whistle

Drove to the shops. What a joy to be out and about. The car is so manoeuvrable, and easy to spot in the car park. A quick Italian tune up certainly shook out the cobwebs!

Job finish, new vacuum advance, point and rotor all form power spark, nice to bring good quality parts here.

Sorry to be nit picky ...

But if that were mine, I'd dress off the top of the points retaining screw. It looks untidy and the next application of a screw driver might dislodge metal shards into the works. Otherwise good work.

A few minutes with a file and oil stone.

Can you get a replacement screw for that?
Mine looks similar, and I wasn't able to find one in a previous search

Shouldn't there be a washer between the head of the securing screw and the slot in the points base? Some sort of domed (Belleville?) type ISTR or a single turn spring plus a flat washer.

Good news - just been out and looked at my reserve Lucas 25D dizzy.

I can confirm that the points retaining screw is 2BA. Needs to be no longer than 3/8"
I assume the earlier Lucas DM2 and the later 45D dizzies are the same - can't speak for the Ducellier device.

This size is commonly used in various places on the Land Rover - notably the screws that fix the dash panel.

You could use a sherardised screw, or a cadmium plated screw, the finish is very similar, or even a s/s screw.
A spring or start washer would make sense.

Used as a breakdown truck today.  Had to tow sons work van home this morning.  It won't start, plenty of diesel at the injectors but they are electronic and obviously not working.  Auto elected coming tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice about the washer, I'll put one
Finish my road test, I'm really happy with  the results, engine ran fine but now run better much smooth and after so many year fighting with poor acceleration now is solved, is another car I'm sure my vacuum device was not working at all.

Best Regards

Finally got round to stripping down a sealed clutch release mechanism having had the parts ordered specially and sat on the shelf for weeks. Took it apart, only to find out that it its a standard 2A clutch release housing and unsealed... :doh
If anybody has a sealed clutch release housing and needs the seals, let me know.

Drove 10 miles to get my fruit and veg. Short stroll for the dog's comfort too.
Oil pressure switch worked fine, ie didn't come on except when it should.
The old one gave the lamp a faint glow even when off. I suspected a short, and when removed, it was bent and of a different design, so suppose that was the problem
