Truck cab headrest for child
« on: March 28, 2020, 03:00:08 PM »

I've been squeezing my 9 year old son into his car seat for a while now...but he's clearly getting too big for it. I'll have to remove the back to the seat, which will leave him perched on the bolster thing. I've been putting it off because taking the back off the car seat leaves his head a tad vulnerable to the sharp edges on the back of the truck cab in an accident. I've searched for stick on/ bolt on detachable headrests with no luck. Options are (1) to fork out for a high back exmoor trim seat - the high back extreme - or (2) see if you lovely lot have any bright ideas...!
Thanks,
Bill

I have defender seats fitted in mine as they have headrests. I normally have a truck cab but have fitted a hard top so that I can paint the cab.

They look great Paul - from Paddocks?

And thanks Gibbo - like the look of those too, I'll have a look at ebay - only need one seat, my head's dense enough as it is ;)

I used to have a truck cab and had the Britpart type high-back seats in it. The seats are pushed forward quite a bit by the cab, as mine is a S3, it has adjustable rails (which frankly are a bit of a joke), so I was able to slide the bases forward to compensate.

Have you considered making a head rest from a piece of plywood, some foam and covering material?
Using two lengths of metal box section (20mm x 20mm?) fixed to the roof frame and the bulkhead, at the back of the truck cab, you can fix the pad "Head rest" to the metal at what ever height is required for your lad's head!
As he gets bigger, you can move it up the metal.
Probably won't look very elegant, but safety and all that...……….

My project 88 will have a roll bar, fixed to the bulk head behind the seats, (it's been ten years so far and still just a rolling chassis) I intend to weld mesh to this, to act as a dog guard. I have purchased two military head rests, for the driver and passenger, which will be fitted to the mesh.
I'm also going to mesh above the cab area, as it's rag top, so that there is some protection, not just a bit of canvas.

In between fitting the HNJ truck cab brackets today (which are great by the way, they're beautifully made and slot straight in) I've been thinking about this. I read somewhere else that the Britpart seats push too far forward in a truck cab so I started planning as you suggest Mr P - 1" of expanded polystyrene (well if it's good enough for crash helmets!) covered by 1" of very high density polyurethane mounted on some chipboard. A little project for the week ahead...
