Naming your Series Land Rover
« on: December 09, 2019, 10:35:00 PM »

How does it work?

During the painful process of selling my SIII (first Series I ever owned, it feels like losing an old friend... Or a limb) I have been asked if she/it has a name ???

I realise now... too late... That despite 5 years loyal service, no she doesn't. :shakeinghead

Dads SII (owned for over 21 years now) has a name, “Flos“... christened by his work mates (F-ing Load Of Scrap) it stuck despite its unkind origin and is now only ever said with affection.

My snotty little Fiesta which I've only had since late September is called "Fester" because... I dunno, it rhymes  ???

But the vehicle I have the strongest connection to, the one I must now let go to another home has remained name less  :RHD

I work in a marina with 100's of boats, 99% have names... Some boats share a name (for example there are two called "Charisma", one is a sail boat, the other a motor cruiser) .. . I even know if I ever have to name a boat it's going to be called “No Name" just to annoy the marina owner when they're doing paperwork  >:D

I know why people name their pride and joy, I just can't work out... How

Did you name your LR? Did it come with a name attached? Do you know how it happened?

I think they earn a name, but lots of them have British names, Queenie, Jeeves, Monty, etc. So far my 109 doesn't have one.

Quite a lot use their registration letters to suggest something.

Else find a 3 year old child to help you  ???

My wife took one look at the horrible 109 S3 diesel I bought - and called it Brian.  I never dared ask who it was named after!

First time I drove my 109 (back in 1995) I encountered a steep down hill to a t-junction. This was before I got the brakes working properly. I actually shouted out
loud “whoa Betsy” as she almost careered across the junction. Betsy has been her name ever since, and she’s a part of the family now.

Call me a curmudgeon however I can't get my head around the idea.

Mod edit: I removed most of what was unnecessary.

I must admit I'm not overly keen on naming vehicles, and like 100+9 I dislike referring to a vehicle as a "he/she".

That said, most of mine are differentiated by an abbreviation of the registration or a descriptive term, e.g. one FFR is called Llandegla because it was bought off a farmer there.

All of my vehicles have names, apart from my modern ish (32 years old) volvo.
Two of mine already had their names when I bought them, being christened by the previous owners, but the others it was more of a case of if the number plate read anything closely resembling a name, or just whatever fitted with the vehicles personality, sort of stuck!

I find names more convenient than 'the Land Rover' or 'the other Land Rover'. Both are named from the number plates - USK is Usk whicih happens to be a town I rather like staying in. PTU is Peter. They are both 'it'.

My wife and our elder daughter (10) have an amusing ongoing battle over the name of my wife's Midget. Plate is SPW so my wife has gone for Sparrow. Daughter wants it to be 'Bridget the Midget'. Wife refused so daughter has re-named it Spew, particularly fitting since it's green.

The registration of my 109 is SYV 329F so it was always known as Sylivia by Dunsfold Land Rover that looked after it since new.
I don't speak to Dunsfold that often these days but Phil still knows I own it and always asks after Sylvia..

Always thought it annoying when people referred to motors as "she"... It's a metal box fer eaven's sake.....I've never named them either but rarely they've acquired a name by chance or association..." Rattler" as one old example.. ;)
Folk often seem to extrapolate something from the reg. plate it seems...
