Title: The most useless and expensive tool ever?????
Post by: Alan Drover on June 11, 2023, 02:50:37 PM
In the current issue of Practical Classics there's a review of a tool to prevent oil spillage from a spin off filter. The filter is loosened with a suitable tool then the £49.54 piece of plastic is pushed on to the filter and unscrewed this preventing oil from running up your sleeve. However, the filter on my 2.5 petrol engine is angled and the one on my MGB is upside down!!!!!!

^^^For the moment anyway, we can relax on that one...

On the 200Tdi engine its even worse and you always get an armpit full of old sump oil. I find a strategically placed piece of heavy duty plastic bag or polyethene does the job fine to divert the run off.

Agreed though - seems like yet another pointless tool.

Why not just loosen the filter then put a plastic bag under it and turn the bag with the filter ???

 :oil spill

Far too much common sense there Alan...

The 2.5 filter is in the same position as the 200/300!Tdi ones. I just slacken mine and let the oil drip out slowly so it's caught in the drainage container.

That’s what bread bags are made for.👌

But bread bags have holes in them don't they to stop the bread sweating? I guarantee the holes will be in the wrong place.

That's is unless you shop at Waitrose - the loaves cost as much as a second mortgage and they come in a paper bag. I know because I made the mistake of buying a loaf there last week...

No, our Hovis comes in a proper plastic bag  :bread

Just think how many plastic bags you can get for £50 ???

Failing that - use the wrapper that your B2L comes in.

We have a bread maker which turns a grey sludge into a loaf of bread in 4 hours.
Maybe a bread maker could be classified under the heading of this topic but it works for us.

Now we've gone way OT... Trying to work out how I could use a bread maker to stop oil drips. Cleaning it might be a problem. New flavour - 20W50...

The bread mix container could be held under the filter to catch the oil.
The variety and humour of replies is what I really like about this forum.

Yes - I can see that as an option, but were I to do that with any kitchen implement (and I don't have a bread maker...), my wife would remove my head with a meat cleaver and feed it to the dog.

Which is exactly the reason I no longer have a wife.

Or a dog.

(She took the meat cleaver with her......)

In my view if we can't waffle somewhere safe like on here, then I think most of us would be a public liability.

Not quite sure how "waffle" translates in Spanish?

Back on topic the greengrocer where I buy our weekly fruit supplies plastic bags to it the fruit in.  They're big enough to take an ERR 3340 filter. Mrs. D puts them to an unmentionable second use.

Hi,

Weld/braze a nut near the bottom of the filter, then use the hole in the nut as a jig to drill through the filter body, try not to damage the thread. Plug the hole in the nut with a short screw and brass washer. Replace filter on engine, start engine for a few seconds to fill the filter, stop and top up oil level.

Note! The hole does not need to be at the bottom of the filter, half way down will suffice ... provided you don't forget that it is NOT completely empty.

I suppose that a real clever-clogs could liberate a plumbing fitting to accept a tapered plug? Or a petrol tap off a motor cycle fuel tank. Whatever turns you on! Cork? Small hole and self tapper?  :stars

602

PS. I wonder if Past Parts could drill and tap the long screw, to accept a bleed nipple? Should I resume taking the tablets?

The problem is with a spin on filter you'd have to do it every time the filter was changed. The expensive piece of plastic is for use with spin on filters. It wouldn't work with the replaceable element type because the retaining bolt would get in the way.

I understood very well, THANK YOU

Regarding the plastic bag, a very good idea, I have a business where we change oil, I will mention it to the workers, it will surely be of interest to them... :first

The simplest ideas are the best. I'll now be giving a single use plastic bag a second use.
