Disconnected the battery as its going to be a while untill I'm safe to drive. Rotator cuff tear surgery. Still the hard tops in the garden make a good table.

Fitted a new fuse box. The 'spring' on the old one wasn't holding the fuses securely and one fell out. Causing a bit of consternation as it was the one feeding the ignition switched feeds. This made the oil pressure gauge go to zero.

Pulled her out of the bushes and jet washed her down.
Long list of jobs to do but the engine still turns over and the chassis paint is peeling off to reveal the coat of smoothrite that I applied in 1993. That’s solidly attached to the chassis and going nowhere.

Another tip run with garden waste.  We can still only take trailers by appointment.  On then to the garden centre for SWMBO to buy some more plants that will produce even more garden waste.

All our garden waste gets composted, even grass cuttings.

We dont have space to compost all our garden waste but we do all our veg peelings etc.  We dont have a lawn, just loads of shrubs and flowers.

It is a good excuse to go out for a ride in the land rover.

Start taking stuff home from the tip Peter Then you might not go as often. And there's always that track to the right of the entrance you can drive on and i think Burgh Hall Rd too.

Vegetable peelings are composted. Hedge cuttings are incinerated and the ash sieved and used on the garden.
The lawn cuttings have so much bindweed in them that they're left on the lawns.
I can't remember the last time I visited the tip. I registered the Land Rover with Hants CC so I could get in but have never tried to since.

A recce for the planned "run out" on the 19th.  First off, the Battle of Sheriffmuir, Nov 1715, Jacobite troops heading south from Perth, clash with Hanoverian "Government" troops sent to block them reaching Stirling.... then a couple of miles down the road the "Atlantic Wall", concrete copies of the Normandy defences,  set up for troops to practise the D-Day landings, then the other side of the A9, Ardoch Fort, one of the largest Roman fortifications in Scotland, part of their multiple attempts to seal off the Highlands from the good ground to the south & east.

A memorial cairn at Sheriffmuir and a "bunker" in the Atlantic Wall

Dropped the oil pan(sump). Cleaned it thoroughly and painted the outside.
Then I stripped the gasket and any residue from the block.
Pumped petrol through the bolt holes and then blasted them with the air hose.
Did the same  using brake cleaner.
Cleaned all the bolts similarly.
Ready to reinstall the pan when the paint is dry.

Question?  Should I use some blue locktite on the bolt threads when I reinstall or just torque them to spec?
I think the original gasket was installed with hylomar on the block which may have helped to keep the bolts somewhat tight.

I'm about to do the same job.
Waiting for the sump gasket to arrive.
I shall be using Blue Hylomar to "stick" the gasket to the sump, then lightly grease the surface that's next to the block.
I won't be bothering to Blue Hylomar the screws in their threads.

Persuaded my broken top steering bearing out of the column with some gentle beckoning, WD40 and a bit of Allen key + vice-grip abuse. No sign of the ball bearings - presumably they've gone to the Great Ball Bearing Hall in the Sky, and definitely not trying to find their way into my steering box :whistle (I did find a few knocking around the footwell, so maybe it'll all be fine)

New part arrives on Monday, I wonder will I have as much fun trying to fit it?

I have a leak from the rear diff, plus the rear springs need a serious looking at. So to do both jobs, I'm removing the axle and springs so I can redo the diff gasket and seal in comfort.

Undoing one of the U bolts - it snapped :agh I got out quickly from underneath. The rest of the nuts on that side are protesting as I remove them. I think the other side 'might' be OK, as I replaced the strap protector.

I have new U bolts in stock.

Unless, you know the U-bolts are very recently new - just angle grind the U-bolts - off
Be prepared for the loud "snap" as they are freed off.
Not worth trying to re-cycle used U-bolts.

Fit new and going off excess thread after a test drive and re-check of tightness.

Checking over the Landie for next weekends run out with Gene. All the oils okay, U bolts on the new springs nipped up slightly, set the tickover slightly quicker as the charge light was flickering, then checked the brake fluid, oh shot! nearly empty....
Why? Checked all around the master cylinders, all dry, checked in the footwell, swimming in brake fluid! Bearmach CB master cylinder bought three years ago only back in service last year. Grrrrr.
Will need to repaint the footwell again after the last one failed after 15 years. :'(
But it shows, it's good the check the brake fluid regularly or 'NAY BRAKES'.
So as Gene has said the run out is on tarmac roads I'll have to resort to the SEAT Ateca. Hey Ho.

It should not need locktite, normal tightening should be sufficient - suggestion would be to use a similar technique to tightening down a head - doing it in stages, across the piece to get an even tightness all round ?

Not so much "today" as "this weekend".  Friday afternoon, a 125 mile trip down to Annan for the Borders Camping weekend - a superb campsite right on the beach looking out across Solway Firth to the hills of the Lake District, fish&chips, setting world to rights around the fire etc, a cracking days Green-Laning in the North Pennines on Sat, BBQ and final details of "setting the world right" agreed, back home yesterday, probably 350 miles all in. No mechanical issues, touched 60mph on the way home, brake-light switch needs replaced... genuine part ordered from Blanchards.

Top Marks to Phil and the Borders crew for a great weekend, good company and stunning scenery.

A nice simple repair to fix the inoperative brake lights noticed by those following me on the weekends Green Laning...

A check on Sunday revealed the switch at the brake pedal was goosed, ordered a new genuine one from PA Blanchard on Sunday, despatched 48 hour Royal Mail on Monday, arrived here 12.30 Weds. The old one had a date code for 1971, the "new" one 1984. Same Lucas 124SA "normally on" switch is used on a multitude of 70s/80s vehicles by the look of it. In use the switch is permanently "off", compressed against a stub on the brake pedal that is being pulled against it by the spring. Operating the brake pedal closes the switch, power to brake lights, happiness all round.

1/2in spanner to remove the switch cover plate and spring from the bulkhead above the pedal, pull the two wires off, 3/4in spanner to remove the old switch from the nut holding it to the bulkhead bracket, check the new switch works by putting the wires back in place, ignition on and taking a look at the back... yep, all good. Reverse the procedure with the cover plate and spring that holds the brake pedal against the switch. Check brake lights are off, check they come on when the pedal is depressed with a bit of rock...Still all good.

Coffee and bask in the glow of a simple job complete

:coffee

Annoyingly the old switch does still work "on the bench" , if jiggled about. For the sake of £2.95 its simpler just to replace it than mess about trying to repair and then have the niggling worry that its packed in again ?

Somewhat out-of-character, Paddocks have sent me the wrong part. I came the conclusion my front prop shaft is finished, after identifying a resonance between 51 and 55 mph over last weekend. I ordered the new STC121 part from Paddocks, which just arrived, but they've sent me FRC4907 the rear prop shaft. It's clearly 5cm too short. I can still take the old one off as an experiment for the coming weekend, but I'll have to wait until next week now to complete the swap :(

Evening, just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I have recently purchased a S2a 1968 and this is my first foray into the series world. I had (until recently) a 200Tdi Defender 1993 which I'd owned for some 12 years and had just finished a nut and bolt rebuild on a galv chassis, my first ever, and then some scum stole it off my drive in July. So having always wanted a S2 I decided now was as good a time as ever to take the leap. I'm not really a purist and I've probably made a whole host of errors in my purchase, but before I embark on anything restorative I thought it wise to seek guidance. I'm in Wiltshire. Cheers.

Getting ready to fit the new LOF clutch. Checked the old spigot bearing and I could feel some slight ridges so I have removed it and the new one is sitting in some hot gear oil overnight (is that right?). Also taking the opportunity to refurbish the rusty/gunky gearbox brackets. The wife is at the hairdressers for a major service (2+ hours) so they are in the dishwasher on a hot wash :agh

Bought a torque wrench last week, so hopefully I will take the first step of the rebuild tomorrow...

Soaking the spigot bush in oil is good - doesn't have to be warm though.

You need to check that the spigot bush is a snug fit on the gearbox input shaft - when it's at room temp.

You can put the spigot bush in the freezer for 30 minutes to shrink it a bit - makes fitting that little bit easier.

Once it's in place, check again that the gearbox input shaft will fit into it.

I have two input shafts, one cut of an old 'box to use for clutch alignment, and the gearbox shaft. Both seemed to be loose on the new bush and equally loose on the old bush in the flywheel. Certainly not snug ???

Removed gearbox mainshaft with some gentle tapping ready to strip down in order to check the  2nd 3rd sleeve tolerances . Third gear is sticking at one point on the sleeve when turned by hand and I think the sleeve is moving on the shaft , hence the decision to remove it. I called into my local LR specialist yesterday and checked out the bush's they held. They were very slightly tighter than the one I had, but I couldn't measure the difference using my digital vernier.

When fitted, the bush is a nice fit to the input shaft.

Wandering what's going on at Paddocks. They sent me the wrong prop shaft a week ago, and still haven't answered the email I sent about it the same day it arrived. They did answer the phone 3 days ago to say they were short staffed and would eventually respond, but since then nothing. I've emailed them again an hour ago. No useful reply, but within 15 minutes of sending it, got an email from their system asking me to review my recent purchase for TrustPilot. Considering their normally excellent service, this is all very odd. I don't really want to give them a bad review, but its getting to the point I might have to.

I'm not defending poor service ... BUT

I do wonder in these times if our expectations are set too high ???

Short staffed and delays in deliveries are understandable.

That said, I recently placed 2 small orders with Paddocks and delivery was excellent - even with the road closed to our part of the village entailing a 5 mile detour !
BUT - why o why does every online transaction involve a series of emails "how did we do ? " and this Trust Pilot nonsense.
I would never look-up Trust Pilot for anything  :shakeinghead

AND - I'm not responding for the purchase of a nut & bolt and a sump gasket  :shakeinghead

New genuine 2 part sleeve and three snap rings ordered from Blanchards . ( The genuine synchro hub that I ordered last Saturday night arrived Tuesday , excellent as always

Removed the incontinent brake master cylinder, scraped the damaged paint off, washed down the spillage and primered the footwell. dismantled the old m/cylinder and found nothing amiss, hmm. The new m/cylinder is different in so much as a different casting and machining and, comes with a 2 year guarrantee so hopefully this one will last longer than 300 miles.

Fitted my new lights . I got fed up with the cheap plastic ones that seem to pack up regularly so I thought I would try the mini ones advertised on eBay.  The lenses are plastic but the bulb holders are metal and therefore don’t come with an earth cable and the live wire is only about 5 inches long and doesn’t have a connector. The cable is long enough for the rear lights but not for the front. It is easy enough to solder a bullet connector on the rear ones and the fronts I just cut the wire from the old lamps and joined them to the new ones. They come with very small nuts and bolts which were no good for the back lights but can be used on the front but I just used the self tappers as I can imagine what it will be like to undo them from under the front wing once they have been there for a while. The side and rear lights came with led bulbs but I didn’t use them as I thought they looked a bit yellow. For about £16 a pair I think they are good value. Time will tell.

Filled up with £30 veg oil so I can continue vaccinating children in schools across North Yorkshire as not one of our local fuel stations had diesel.
Thank goodness I’m running a 200tdi that will run ok on it.

It does seem this issue is a bit patchy. Over the weekend our local garage ran out but had fuel on Monday afternoon and ever since, yesterday a BP site in Stirling was empty but three others I saw were fine, today every garage I passed, including the BP site was OK, no queues, no drama.

Thought about it, missed it, still trying to find a suitable work space to bring it in from the cold for restoration... :'(

Received a very large box on a pallet. The box alone is a work of art. In large letters on the front is stenciled "Robert Owen Engineering" Even the screws holding the box together are torx screws!

Next job is to open it. Hopefully I will find a fully prepared and painted late 2A bulkhead. If not, I've messed up somewhere...

The grand opening will be on Thursdays. Will report back.

Opened aforesaid mentioned big box from Rob Owen... Really pleased with the contents. It may have taken a few months (I think nearly 5 months), but looks like it was definitely worth the wait.

Now I've got to finish building the Land Rover...

^^^^ At current timber prices you could probably recoup most of the price you paid just by flogging the box

When I bought my Robert Owen bulkhead, they arranged for the crate to be collected.

I wonder how many times the crate has been used (and reused)?

Why don't you sign and date the crate on the inside so that if any of us get it in the future we can report back to you.

You never know a crate with your signature on it could be worth zillions in years to come!

Ok i'll get back in my box!

Good luck

Hi,

The Freelander passed it's test today.

Three bulbs and no advisories.

Apart from fitting a new clutch, and removing the noise from the transmission, many months ago, she has been extremely boring.

We've just realised that we have never received a new V5, and the VED expired in the not too recent past ... as had the MOT. I guess I'm going to have to use the "green slip" ... and pay some back duty ... if I can remember how to do that.

Doh!

Now there's an idea...! I reckon I was the first user of this box, but unfortunately I've sealed it up for return now. Can't face undoing all those TORX screws again!

Just out of interest what size torx were they?

My bulkhead is due in about 4 weeks time so I want to be prepared.

I never could wait until Christmas morning!

Good luck

Hi,

Nearing the end of the Colonial period (or so I was told), it was not unusual to see houses in Australia with AUSTIN OF LONGBRIDGE stencilled on the front wall.
