Title: What you did with your Series 2 in November ...
Post by: Bloke on November 01, 2021, 10:44:05 AM
Drove it over to Malvern Wells for the 4x4 Land Rover and Vintage spares day, some interesting "puddles" on the B4219! Back to Malvern for lunch and a natter with a friend, then over past Ross to my sister's for dinner. Back home this evening up the A49 cruising happily at 60 on the straight bits!

I think I saw your Station Wagon in the car park! Does it have the 2021 club rally sign on the front bumper?

Andy, I am very impressed with Clare's writing and Garry's photography, he makes YOD look much better than it is. I am glad the club got a mention. I will be out in it tonight going to a NW 4X4 meeting in Tyldesley.  What state was the A6 in when you were coming home from work?

Only just seen this Peter. Unfortunately i havent been in work for a few days. No other reason than a break. I can guess that it's got standing water in places across the width and certainly as you approach the dual carriage at Adlington and at the junction of Station rd and Blackrod bypass. Also running across Blackrod bypass near the Cherry Tree pub coming back.

Fitted some mats that I had bought some time back. In the end, very little needed doing to get them to fit, so much so I am a little embarrassed by the thread I started on the subject... Still, shouldn't have to fettle brand new stuff to fit :stars

My daughter is back from Uni, so we went out for a evening drive and a quick visit to the pub. Her first trip in Gertie since rebuild and she really noticed the difference, particularly the clutch which used to be quite savage.

Lights, instrument lights, indicators, choke warning light... well everything works well since the new wiring loom. It is still a novelty to me. Great to be out in the dark... and confident.

Had a 50 mile round trip to parents yesterday to do some gardening duties.  This was after having re-gapped the spark plugs to 0.8mm from 0.6mm - it's lost in the mists of time as to why/who said I should have a 0.6mm gap with Luminition electronic ignition  ???

It does seem to run a bit better:
Idles better (albeit a little fast)
Maybe a tad more power, 60mph on the Keynsham bypass (speedo indicated - but it is correct for the tyres!)
Doesn't run on when stopped
I'll be interested to see what MPG I get

I also filled up with my first tank of E10 petrol on the way, I don't expect any disasters as I've got the correct grade fuel pipe, the only doubts are the carb & fuel pump innards.

Cheers,

Chris

A few tinkering jobs. Rubber boot for drivers indicator needed turning 180degrees. Dried out the indicator unit cleaned it out and put back together. Put new Rocker Cover seals , found i need a new cap(see wanted post) Waterproof padlock on fuel cap was full of water. So dried and put some grease in it. Put in a windshield protecting the lpg vapouriser.

Went out for a 45 mile round trip for the dual purpose of buying some chemicals for our Hot Tub drain down & refill, but more importantly, to give the S2 a really good fast run.

I wanted to see how putting in a new thermostat, and re-fitting my original newly-refurbished 25D distributor,  affected my LR.  Very pleased to report that I had an excellent run, with a decent level of heat from the round heater (though not quite enough to describe the interior as really warm  :-X), and good pick up and steady acceleration throughout.

Unfortunately, I've only been able to fill up with E10 so far, and I did notice a very slight "flat spot" once fully warmed up.  This wasn't noticeable when the choke was half-out, so I suspect a little tinkering with the carb will be called for.  Particularly, as the tick-over is a little slower than normal.

Got to do a little tinkering with the advance & retard knob on the 25D, and a carb tinker should get it absolutely right....  :RHD

0.6mm is almost 25 thou which would have been the original plug gap spec for standard coil and contact breaker ignition. Any uprated spark generation system with higher HT voltage will benefit from a larger gap  'cos there will be more energy in the spark that way.

Had an early morning run up the M6 and the Ferry to Tarn Hows in the Lake District. Home via the quiet lanes on the edge of Grizedale Forest and then eventually straight down the A6. Also on the way home searched out just north of Lancaster a nice little track and also a green lane for future club runs. Lovely day out weather wise and a nice 130mile round trip. It's only the second day too that the ferry had been running since all the rain last week, the lake levels had been to high.

Sorted a leaking front hub and replaced the contaminated brake shoes. The very clear pictures in the "General Maintenance" section were very helpful as a reminder of which way the springs go... Thanks very much Wittsend for the write-up.

The Bearmach shoes, made in China, went on easily, no binding, seemed well made with a solidly peened steady post and chamfered linings. Time will tell.

Edited to add. One annoyance, the two small bolts that hold the retaining clamp on the shoes were M6 rather than UNF. Meant I had to stop using my "onboard" tools and go find a metric 10mm spanner. This seems to be common with the pattern replacement shoes ?

Picked up a ton of smokeless coal from the end of the track as the driver wouldn't come down, prob sensible.
Likely beyond the limit of the trailer so put some in the loadspace.
The 88 in low ratio 4wd was brilliant to control the tow over the lumps, but was not smokeless!

This week a couple of nice early morning runs to work and today a trip to the local tip. One of the employees up there started chatting to me about the land rover and also another one that visits on a regular basis. A nice lovely Series 2 1959 year, belonging to Peter (Romahomepete). Also a friendly wave from a Discovery 4 driver.

Installed my new parts washer in the workshop.

Actually, the old dishwasher - it's still working but most of the plastic parts inside are breaking up, leaving rust stains on the crockery. I hope it doesn't leave rust stains on my LR bits!

I've always had a problem with my N'S front brake, it has never given consistent scraping noises, and always stuck at one point. I was always pulling it apart looking for problems.

A thought occured, what has remained the same – the wheel. So put the spare wheel on, the brakes worked satisfactorily! Cleaned corrosion off the back of the original wheel, brakes OK now.

Bad back has forced me to swap the handbrake lever to a later cranked version. Much easier to operate now.

Also checked the points and timing. It was a couple of degrees retarded, sitting at 1 degree btdc. Set it to 3 and it feels a bit sharper. Throttle progression is definitely improved. I thought E 10 petrol would have made it pink at 3, but seems fine so far.

So do you have a water supply in your workshop or are using some other self contained system ?

I have a water supply over a Belfast sink, so I have a drain as well. Plus there's a small hot water heater for hand washing.

It felt very domestic in there with the parts washer running!

Gearbox installed , made easier by selecting first gear so I could turn the shaft from the back end , helping the input shaft to line up. Then the clutch mechanism , handbrake connections , transfer lever and finally the overdrive complete with anti scuff paste which I believe helped enormously when pushing it forwards into place for that last inch or so.

Just got to get a rear prop shaft on and I am ready for the test run.

I have been welding and reinforcing parts of my chassis, next month I should be ready to paint it.
First epoxy primer, then black polyurethane.

I am also installing electronic injection to my brother's SIIA, I already installed an oxygen sensor and a temperature sensor, they still have a lot to do ...

Almost installed crankshaft - waiting on thrust washers! Almost got the pistons and conrods together - can't remove the conrod bushes to replace them - so off to the machine shop. Drilled out alloy core plugs from the head, now waiting on core plugs from the UK. Wire wheeled the air filter and battery box stand. So you know... a bit of a mixed evening.

Increased the range of the car!

Was only getting about 75-100 miles out of a tank full of petrol before reaching empty (on the gauge), so investigated. Bent the arm on the sender straight, just got 150 miles out of a tank - much better!

Found out that a 58 Land Rover, with a fairly feeble engine, loaded with half a ton of logs, can tow a 110 Defender up some quite steep hills :-)
Admittedly not very quickly.

An "interesting " weekend, after Friday nights visit by Arwen the Elven Princess....  Hundreds of trees down, power out all across the village from Friday night until late this afternoon - and not just out here in the sticks, Callander, Pop 5000 had the same issues. FM Radio signal still gone, Mobile phones were down too and as part of our Internet consists of Fibre run along old telephone poles, that's been minced too. Currently working by tethering my phone to the PC, a ropey 3G signal instead of the usual 4G....  Lucky for us we are "off-grid" so still had power and hot water, neighbours came round for a warm up, bringing some refreshments...

On Sat morning, trying to get out to town, I'd cut three trees out of the way then found this across the road... spotted the even bigger one just beyond, gave up and left it to the Councils professionals !  Fair play to them they'd got the roads open by late Sat.

Think I'd have done the same Gene, clearing wind falls like that can be a dicey game. We came off light here in west Wales compared to many, but I keep watching the remaining Larch along the boundary which are due to be clear felled by March due to disease, the sooner they are gone the better!.
