Not having a good day guys.
« on: March 09, 2022, 01:17:19 AM »

Blew a rear half axel back in the fall.  Had it repaired and a few other items done. Had the rear diff. rebuilt.
But didn't want to pick her up from my PO (30 miles distance) due to very salty roads.
Picked her up today after months!

I travelled about 8 miles toward home and noticed an unusual sound coming from the rear that would stop after reaching speed (45 mph).  didn't think much of it, it wasn't very loud.

Then wham!!  The rear end froze and stopped her in her tracks.  A very nice lady in a LR4 came by while I was waiting for the tow truck.  She and her husband also have a 109.  She offered to assist and commiserated for a few minutes.  Some how I felt a little better.

Another 1/2 axel?  sounded like the differential blew up?

I am not having a good day.    :thud

Sorry to hear it. Even that pic looks sad. Hope it's not too difficult or expensive to fix.

Thanks.  I thought the photo looked sad, too.

Sounds like someone forgot to put oil in the dif.  :thud  Did the rear wheels lock up, screech and lay rubber?

Get er home, set up on 4 jacks, turn the rear wheels by hand? If normal the opposite wheel spins in the opposite direction. If nothing turns, it's a bad thing..  Pull the wheels off, then drive flanges and eventually the half shafts. Do you have a workshop manual? It will tell you how and what to do. Call out for help if you need it sounds like the LR4 folks would be helpful. :RHD

This was the result of my rear diff giving up back in 2020.

Sounds like someone forgot to put oil in the dif.  :thud

Could well be that.

I had a Range Rover Classic rebuilt after an accident, by a well known local Firm.

When it was finished, I was in ther hire car and my wife was driving the RRC on the motorway home.

After a while, she rang to say there was a "funny noise".

I said don't worry (thinking it was a "woman thing!") and told her to keep going.

A little later the differential disintegrated, the propshaft started flapping up and down - and she only just managed to get off the motorway to a safe place.

Someone at the repair Firm clearly thought that Fred had filled the diff with oil. Fred clearly thought that Charlie had.

Need I say more? :thud

The Firm collected the vehicle from the side of the road, rebuilt the rear axle and later delivered the RRC to my door.

With a bottle of whisky and a box of chocs on the passenger seat...... :wine3

These things can just happen, especially at the most inconvenient time.

I am told that the rear spider gear pin came out and jammed the diff.  OP had reconditioned diffs. on hand, so all fixed.  Fingers crossed.
Isn’t it amazing how much we care for these trucks?

David, isn't the "most inconvenient time" bit part of the military definition of "Murphy's law"?

Hi,

Assuming you are not driving on ice ... which you probably were ...

Disconnect front of rear prop, let it dangle. Remove both rear half-shafts Engage 4WD HI and drive home.

I broke a half-shaft, half-way down France. Did the above. About 600 miles home, pulling a caravan.  I got some funny looks from my monoglot French farmer neighbour, while I was pulling things apart, but he didn't ask, so I didn't explain.

I wish that I were that mechanically inclined.  However,, I was not charged for the 5-10 minute flat bed tow back to the garage.

I pick her up tomorrow, let's hope all is well. Rebuilt diff with two new used 1/2 axels.  I'm told new ones are soft.

Picked her up today.  It is good to have the 109 back after about 5 months.  Truth is there was heavy salt on the roads for most of that time.

I have never seen her this shiny.  My guy polishes the trucks when complete.   Nice.

Drove her most of the warm afternoon.  then she decided not to start.  Trying on and off for an hour and she turned over, started for a moment then quit.  Time after time.  Finally gave up and called a tow.  After a 15 minute rest, she started right up and I drove her home.  I had noticed one hesitation while driivog before the no start tantrum.  I did pump the manual lever on the petrol pump and waited the 15 minutes.  Any ideas whether this was the cure?
Thanks

Tough to say from 3000 miles away. Could be fuel, spark, air. I'd suggest getting a workshop manual and tightening all the fuel line fittings. checking the ground straps, wires from the coil to dizzy, timing and tightness of the dizzy clamp( not too tight, just not moving.
