What's this 20mph thing?
« on: March 13, 2022, 08:07:27 AM »

Hi,

I was just browsing, as you do, and I found something about the Welsh Government wanting to reduce the speed limit (on roads with street lighting?0 to 20mph.

My thoughts?  Speeds that low will mean a lower gear, so greater fuel consumption, and more polution. Traffic will take longer to travel the same distance, thereby using that bit of road for longer, so more congestion.  Fewer deliveries in the same time, so more HGVs.  There must be much more.

Question ... what is their ulterior motive? Can we assume that pedal cycles will be required to have speedometers?

My Local Authority is complaining about the reduced income from parking during lock-down.

If flashing headlamps is only allowed to show you are there, then surely it's the other driver's fault if he interprets it wrongly?

In MK, and presumably elsewhere, narrow road and parked car, the driver who decides to stop, to make way for the other car, usually gives a quick flash to say "I have stopped!" (Perhaps we should all run up a green flag)  Maybe we should drive full time on headlamps, and switch them off when giving way. Alternatively, does a prolonged main beam mean "I'm coming through regardless, and my lights are brighter than yours!"

I first read the Highway Code when I was in short trousers ... and understood every word.

I suppose I'd better order a copy of the new version, plus a copy for the grand-children.

PS.

Two vehicles, one a hearse, the other a fire tender on a "shout", meet in a narrow street.

Which is required to give way?

20 mph is no problem for my Land Rover as it will trickle along easily at that speed in top gear.

There are lots of residential areas especially around schools in Bristol that have 20mph speed limits.

Hi,

The answer to my earlier question ... ALL vehicles must give way to a hearse

But I don't know where that is written down. Anybody? It should go down well in pub quizzes.

I get very annoyed by 20MPH speed limits (unless outside a school during school hours). I drive in first gear to make as much nuisance as I possibly can.

Hello John, good old Dripford isn't just looking at 20 mph in more miles than we have roads he is also setting upon us ( here in Wales ) an absolute plague of 50 mph limits. From my perspective and as much as it pains me you are better off in MK than back " home ."

.. only if it's carrying a customer.

Hi Alan,

But how would you know ... without looking.

A few months ago, I passed a horse-drawn hearse, on Watling Street between Bletchley and Two Mile Ash, just North of Milton Keynes.

Wrong side of the road. There was a box in the back, but no accompanying traffic.

I didn't have time to get a "positive fix", on the driver and front passenger, other than they might have been my friends from South Wales, who bought my filly foal, as a yearling, and later used her to pull their own wedding carriage. They also used her to compete "off road", puling a little cart.

She was a cracker, but hated the lunging rope, eventually had to be lunged in a narrow lane, on a six foot rope". On the other hand, the first time my horsey friend climbed on her back, Ginny (short for Regina, but you have to be careful how you say that) just stood there, looking over her shoulder. "Hullo! What are you doing up there?"

The other thing in Wales is the legal limit on alcohol prices which often means when supermarkets have offers we in Wales have to pay more for a bottle of Gin or a pack of beer or a bottle of wine than the better paid people in England! :wine3

 is that a hate crime?

Probably but if " they " were to lock you up you'd have plenty of company - probably around 75 million cellmates   :tiphat
