What tyres for 231601
« on: June 04, 2023, 06:59:06 PM »

Interested in what tyres folks are fitting to the 231601 steel (16x5) wheels.
Whats preferred and why?
TIA

Clearly looking to go radial option.
But looking to get an understanding of the majority consensus.

With the original steel 231601 steel wheel, is everybody using an inner tube, has any tried without, and what issues bead seal or air leakage.

With the original 600-16 tyre - what radial alternative sizes are you using and which manufactures, again a range of widths become possible.
I'm based in Canada so may not ultimately have the same choices as available in the UK, but would like to understand what has become most popular for a 1964 2a SWB there.
Any help and guidance will be appreciated.

Are you staying on the pavement or going off-road? ???

I ran toyo 225 75 16 open country mt tyres on my swb for a while.

I thought they looked pretty good, reminded me of 600s a lot. but much much cheaper.

did well on and off road. though I don't know about road noise as its a 2.25 diesel, so all I hear is the engine....

added a nice little photo I took in autumn, the tyres looked pretty good on it. they filled the wheel arches nicely, but didn't look quite as big as the 7.50 16s do on a SWB.

You can't use tubeless tyres on rims designed for tubes as there's no safety hump to stop the tyre coming off the rim in the event of deflation.

I have fitted Avon Traction 600 with inner tubes. I like them and they look right for the Series 2A.

Rather expensive option but we do get a discount if you ask kindly at Vintage Tyres.

Cheers

As you are based in Canada, it might be more of a case of what is or isn't available.600-16 might be available in radial, as would 650-16.205R16 is the radial size to go for if they are about, never saw many SWB or LWB running standard size tires.
