S2 1960 SWB 2ltr Diesel - Valuation please
« on: June 04, 2023, 09:07:59 PM »

Posted here because the L/R is not currently for sale.

The owner is not a club member nor internet user and has asked me if I know what his L/R might be worth. I haven't bought (or sold) a L/R for a long time and the values do seem to have changed a lot over recent years, so I am asking those who might know on here.

The L/R was bought as a project some years ago. The owner had served his time on Series vehicles so this had seemed a good idea. Unfortunately while he might now have the time, he is not as young or supple as he once was. He is questioning the value to make a decision about whether to keep it and do the work, or sell to someone who can. Please don't post "I'll give you £xxxx.xx and take it away today", as those comments won't be passed on.

I haven't seen the vehicle but some details and photos are listed below: -

S2 1960 SWB 2ltr Diesel
First registered 19/12/1960
Chassis number is 146-100xxx
The V5C is in the owners name. He has receipt of purchase and confirmation of SORN from the DVLA.
The chassis has a replacement crossmember and is thought to be mainly ok, but does need welding on one of the front dumb irons.
The bulkhead is original (bolt on door stays) and is in good shape, though it has been retro-fitted with the single-motor wiper system.
The vehicle was not a runner when bought but the engine does turn over.
The gearbox has been pulled back to fit a new clutch but job not finished.
It has also been fitted with an alternator and electric winch.

See the photos below for general views, I can post a few more if the response needs it: -

Looks like a candidate for a total rebuild. £1500ish? A quick search through the Ebay completed sales shows similar condition ones going for about £1500

I may be wrong but the Engine doesn't look original, more like a 2.25 L to me

I did think the same when I saw the picture and said so to the owner. He assured me it was a 2ltr saying they are very similar engines with the main visible difference being in the fuel injector pump (which can barely be seen in the photo). I don't know enough about early diesels to argue.

The engine is a 2.25lt diesel, retro-fitted into a 1961 (model-year) 2lt diesel vehicle.

HI Dormy,

You can either get the engine number to confirm what everyone is saying that the engine fitted is a 2 1/4 Litre Diesel and with the injectors fitted it may be a later 2 1/4 Litre Diesel Engine rather than an early 2 1/4 Diesel Engine.

The other way to confirm that the engine is Not a 2 litre Diesel is the 2 Litre Diesel Engine blocks are different as they have Wet Liners and each Wet Liner has a hole in between the liner O Rings.   These holes are next the 4 vertical ribs on the Exhaust/Inlet side of the Block - See the attached photo.

No more doubt: -

The engine number is; 90651823C

According to Glencoyne's website; 906xxxxxx = Series III diesel 2286cc 3-bearing

Any more thoughts to valuation now we know it has a much later engine ?

Somewhere between £1,000 and £2,000.

At a grand, I’d be tempted.

At £1,500 I’d probably pass.

Someone might pay north of £2,000 if you could get it in front of the right audience, but you’d likely have to wait…

You don’t say what the registration number is, or whether it’s transferable, because that might make a difference.
