Hi,

Er ... how is the area of a windscreen defined when it's a "split screen"? (Academic question ... I have intention of testing this on the road/in court)

I could claim that I have a full view of the road ahead just by looking through the right hand piece of glass. Does that mean I do not have to clear the left hand piece of glass?

I thought that it was the area swept by the wiper blade but I may be wrong.

Hi ,

Correction to my opening mail (above) ....

....  I have NO intention of testing this on the road/in court

I agrree (logically) that it's the swept area that must be kept clear, but that might be in conflict withm the requiremet for you to have a clear view of the road ahead

Define "AHEAD"!

It could mean a rectangle the width of the vehicle extending forward into infinity.

Or it could mean the full width of the road (and footpaths), starting on a line projected out from both sides of the windscreen,. to the fences on both sides of the road (impossible even with a clear screen, unless your eyeballs are glued to the glass).

My brain hurts.

It’s a matter of common sense.

You must clear all of the screen of frost or snow.

If you have time to clear a slot you have time to do it properly.

I would expect the police to stop and fine you if you didn’t.

Hi Alan,

I can't argue ....

... but when you are on the M25, it's bucketing down with snow, blind Juggernauts are skimming the seat of your pants, and your wipers can't handle things ....

"Clearing the swamp and alligators" comes to mind.

In my days of driving cars without heaters (eg Austin 7s, Morris 8s, etc) I used to stuff a folded fag packet under the back end of the bonnet, let the hot warmish air from under bonnet de-ice the windscreen. It DID work.

Maybe some louvres near the back of an S2's bonnet could perform a similar service?

All these drivers got fined - they should have been removed from the road and had their vehicles crushed  :shakeinghead

I'm wondering, if I drove around with the screen folded down, but was wearing really dark sunglasses, I could still get a pull?

However, the COD's were revised a few years ago and the standards were relaxed.

So get your windows tinted because the Government doesn't care!
