Short length of mild steel bar for 602's project.
« on: May 10, 2020, 07:52:42 PM »

Hi,

I need a length of mild steel bar, 10mm thick (but can live with up to 15mm), by 80mm wide (but can live with 70mm*), and 120mm long (can live with 100mm*), (*but I'd rather not).

This will form my gearbox "spinner" adaptor, for hand cranking my (as yet un-named) (Dinkie?) project around my front garden, and into my garage.

I'm happy to pay "off-cut" prices for the metal, and "snail-mail" postage. (And I haven't forgotten that I already owe somebody postage ... it WILL get there.)

Similar size in aluminium would be acceptable, subject to reduced postage compensating for increased cost of material. Aluminium would not be as long lived, if anybody wanted wanted to borrow the tool. On the other hand, assuming the tool works well, I will make post drawings on this forum.

Basically, the tool will be "six"  10mm diameter holes, on a 90mm PCD, (but with two of the holes being in mid air, if you see what I mean), and a hole 9/16" in the centre, to accept an S2A splined wheel stud.

More anon!

Ooops, already asked ... and answered.

It's probably an "age thing".

Hi,

Ha!  Tavistock Street seems to be "two hoots and a holler" from our daughter's house, which is about three miles from our house (say two and a half minutes, if the lights are against me), but in an area "what I've never been in".

It looks like I want to get onto the V7, cross the H10 at the Denbigh Roundabout, first left (mini-roundabout?),  straight thru next roundabout? (map obscured), next right (mini roundabout), next right into Tavistock Street. *** it, sounds like Sat-Nav territory. I'll phone first.

PS, Barbara has just had her first drive in her buggy, bedroom to kitchen. She's never met handlebars before.  :stars, although she did once accompany me on a 3 hour pony trek, riding a 15hh greymare nag. I think she will "get it"... eventually

I'll let the sat-nav guide me. I don't know when.

Hi again,

I think that drilling the flat bar is sorted.

My next need is for a 1/2" drive extension about 1500mm long ... clutch spliines to front bumper. I know I have some extensions, but I doubt it's that many, or where they are. I haven't been able to walk through my  garage for nearly two years. If push comes to shove, I'll buy a length of 1/2" square bar, at the previously recommended steel stockholder. Unless anybody knows a source of cheapie extension bars?

My next task is to dig a hole in my "other side" garden, drop a length of chain in, back fill with POSTCRETE, to give me somewhere to park the trailer, with a big padlock. That should give me room to actually walk through my garage.

John, I just private messaged you but cant put pics in msg it seems..., I've made, as we discussed, a simple lump of bar with a LR wheel nut crudely welded to the middle, and two bolt holes to fix it  to the flange, I've tried it on another flange and it'll certainly work to rotate your g/box input shaft etc etc...ill post it to you asap ( just the bar that is, I already sent you a flange!! )  ;)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the picture (and everything else). We'll discuss it further by PM.

Looking at the picture, I think I will hit the drive flange with my angle grinder (if I can find it), to notch the bar into the spigot. What is the width of the bar?

Next job at this end is to dig a hole in my side garden, dangle a length of chain into it, and backfill with Postcrete, so I can tether my little trailer, safe from clefti-wallahs. This is to make room in my garage, so I can assemble the work bench what Barbara gave me for my birthday.

The bar is a sniff over 2ins wide, but is just a rough random lump I found so I'd wait till it arrives if I were you before grinding anything !
It's in the post to you in a jiffy bag now anyway.. ;)
